Well it's either that or ram it down their throats that marriage isn't between a man and a woman, it's a social contract.

Except that it forces equality by lowering the status of "marriage" rather than elevating the status of gays.

And how could this possibly fly? Wouldn't the same prejudiced douchebags opposing same-sex marriage be just as outraged over the "debasing" of marriage via its legal standing as they would over dudes being allowed to marry dudes?

I would argue that this elevates the status of marriage. Now it can be nothing but a contract endorsed by the state, with my change it becomes a sacrament.
I would call that a step up.

I sort of agree. But it always was a sort of spiritual thing to me, whether it came recognized by the state or not. Ultimately the spiritual sanctity of marriage will always be dependent on the spouses themselves and their relationship to God. It does not depend on what other sorts of arrangements are permitted by the state or by whatever culture thinks or by the way other people treat their marriage vows. People should just mind their own business and leave judgment to God.

It's the only compromise available and it has the benefit of actually being defensible and logical.
