Boy, I'm glad the IOC held out for those "free speech" zones

BEIJING — Two elderly Chinese women have been sentenced to a year of “re-education through labor” after they repeatedly sought a permit to demonstrate in one of the official Olympic protest areas, according to family members and human rights advocates.

Seventy-nine-year-old Wu Dianyuan, right, and her neighbor Wang Xiuying, 77, waited to apply for a protest permit outside a public security bureau in Beijing on Monday. They were later sentenced to a year of "re-education through labor."
The women, Wu Dianyuan, 79, and Wang Xiuying, 77, had made five visits to the police this month in an effort to get permission to protest what they contended was inadequate compensation for the demolition of their homes in Beijing.
During their final visit on Monday, public security officials informed them that they had been given administrative sentences for “disturbing the public order,” according to Li Xuehui, Ms. Wu’s son.
Nice. They were arrested for trying to get a permit to speak.
Not that we can say much to the Chinese about it...
DENVER - Activist groups say the converted warehouse poses a threat to civil liberties. The city maintains the facility is needed in case of mass arrests during the Democratic National Convention.
"The public was never going to view this place, it was just found out," Spagnuolo said. "They got caught with this place. They told our lawyers in negotiations that this place didn't even exist."
The makeshift holding center, dubbed "Gitmo on the Platte" by activists, is located on city-owned property near Steele Street and 38th Avenue. Newly-installed security cameras guard the exterior, chain-link fences and barbed wire form cells inside.
"We feel the city should be ashamed of this secret prison they've set up," said Re-create '68 organizer Glenn Spagnuolo.
Spagnuolo and other activists gathered outside the formerly-secret facility on Friday to protest the city's plan to use it as a processing center for all those arrested outside the DNC.
"The public was never going to view this place, it was just found out," Spagnuolo said. "They got caught with this place. They told our lawyers in negotiations that this place didn't even exist."
I suppose free trade is working to level the playing field. Too bad it's the US that's getting leveled.

I'm sure that the IOC is shocked - SHOCKED - by this turn of events. I know that I sure am.

Not sure which possibility is worse: that the IOC were stupid enough to believe China's promises on human rights or that they were cynical enough to talk the talk.

I'm pretty sure that you don't need to guess - it can be chalked up to cynicism.
During a discussion of how great the opening ceremonies were, I heard one talking head say something to the effect of "the IOC has never met a dictatorial regime that it didn't like."

Earlier this week I said I was all excited about the prospect of a new Cold War, since as a kid I felt like I missed out on all the paranoia.
But it feels like we overshot the time warp, and landed back in 1936.
Heil!

But at least in 1936 there was a touch of defiance. E.g. Jesse Owens.
This time around, the world seems completely cowed and submissive.

With no ideological enemy we can afford to lose as a trading partner, who shall we defy?

Not that the two are anywhere near similar, but you can thank recreate '68 for denver PoPo feeling like they need a little more cold storage for the anarchists.

I really hope that the far left have learned since then. "Humphrey isn't absolutely what we hippies want! Let's trash everything!"
And then they got Nixon. BIG smurfing IMPROVEMENT.

Not likely on this go around
Denver could face a "dangerous situation" on the eve of the Democratic National Convention, war protesters said Thursday, after losing a coveted permit for Civic Center to the convention host committee.
"When things blow up because the police have to enforce a permit that the Democrats got, don’t blame us for that," said Glenn Spagnuolo, an organizer for the Re-create 68 Alliance.

Humphrey supported the war.
