Iraq insists on a deadline for withdrawal - regardless of "conditions"

Iraq sneers at Warshington's pussy-footing around

Last week, U.S. and Iraqi officials said the two sides had agreed tentatively to a schedule which included a broad pullout of combat forces by the end of 2011 with a residual U.S. force remaining behind to continue training and advising the Iraqi security forces.

But al-Maliki's remarks Monday suggested that the Iraqi government is still not satisfied with that arrangement. An aide to the prime minister said Monday that Iraq remained adamant that the last American soldier must leave Iraq by the end of 2011 — regardless of conditions at the time.

So is Washington basically losing control of events? It really seems that after years of blood and sacrifice, the US is being kicked out.

In the old days, an unfortunate accident would befall the Prime Minister, with a friendlier junta of generals taking his place. Can/will that happen now? How serious is the desire in the States to keep American troops in Iraq?

The funny thing is that one of the Big Bush Arguments is that his policy/strategy would not be shaped by US domestic politics and the whims of voters, but here we are being shaped by the reality of popular opinion (which is what Malaki is really responding to) in a foreign country.

Well we have to leave on deadline, then. They asked us to. I heard from ]Dick Morris that "we went into Iraq at the invitation of the government. Not as an invasion."

So if they want us to leave, I'm sure we'll leave.

Report: signed, sealed, delivered

"There is an agreement actually reached, reached between the two parties on a fixed date which is the end of 2011 to end any foreign presence on Iraqi soil," Maliki said in a speech to tribal leaders in the Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone.

"Yes, there is major progress on the issue of the negotiations on the security deal," Maliki said.

"But ... but ... but ..." Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said desperately during a visit to Baghdad last week.

All over but the shouting? Or have contacts already been made to launch a coup?

Clearly, Bush has information from CONDITIONS ON THE GROUND that everything has progressed so that 2011 can be a firm date. He'd never agree to a timeline that wasn't 100% based on CONDITIONS ON THE GROUND.
