The cold winter
As winter approached, the blackfoot Indians needed to know how much preparation they needed to make.
So they asked their chief how cold it was going to be.
The chief said he didn't know, but he would go to town and call the weather service to ask. He suggested that they start collecting wood in case it was going to be cold.
The next day, he went to town and called the weather service.
Chief: Hello, I would like to know what the weather is going to be like this winter.
Weather Service: It looks like it is going to be cold.
So the chief returned and told his people that it was going to be cold, and they should collect more wood.
They collected wood all week, but weren't sure they had enough. So they asked the chief how cold it would be.
The chief went in to town and called the weather service -
Chief: Last week I called and you said it was going to be cold. How cold will it be?
Weather Service: It looks like it is going to be very cold.
So the chief returned and told his people, and suggested that they collect as much wood as they could find.
The next week, they had collected every piece of wood they could find, and they were wondering if they needed to order additional wood. So they asked the chief, and he said he wasn't sure, but he would go back to town and try to find out.
So he went back to town and called the weather service again.
Chief: Last week you said this was going to be a very cold winter. Could you elaborate?
Weather Service: It looks like this will be the coldest winter ever.
Chief: Really, how do you know?
Weather Service: The Blackfoot Indians have been collecting wood like mad.

I love the idea of the Old Farmer's Almanac having a website, but it makes it too easy to check the accuracy of their forecasts. "Clear and cool" doesn't really describe the near-record highs I've been seeing lately.

And lo, they scoffed at thy servant, whomst thou did send with portents and dire warnings! Yea, verily did they scoff and mock him. And severly did'st thou send thy servants and mightly smote them, the unbelievers, with thy mighty wind, and flail the flesh from their bones with the icy stones of thy wrath, and drown them in the fulsome might of thy waters.

Re: The cold winter
Compared to last year's drought, this year has been wonderfully humidity free here. I woke up this morning to 58 degrees. It heats up to almost 90 degrees during the day, but the cool dry air makes it much more livable.
So I kind of believe the 'Numb's the word' warning from the almanac. Kind of - because the weather here is so fickle I don't ever believe a weather report that forecasts for more than two day.
I'd better tell my parents to gather wood like crazy for their woodstove.
