Browsers are much better nowdays than when they first started appearing. They do a better job of guessing what is meant by the code, and will regress from the current web standard to the much laxer standards prior to todays. So under HTML 1.0 and whatever magic the programmers put into the browser, it might actually see most of that code as ok and render it or make an approximation on rendering it.
