You don't have to care about an animal to be charged with cruelty to animals for intentionally killing it.
Just so you are aware - in California, with the exception of rattlesnakes, it is illegal to intentionally cause the death of a native reptile - you can be charged and prosecuted, so if you come across any - stay clear and let them go on their merry way.

Oh - and with respect to rattlesnakes, there are some species that are protected due to declining numbers.
Kill one of those and you get in big trouble, so if you can't tell your rattlesnakes apart, it's better to leave them be as well - ignorance isn't a defense.

It's funny, I grew up about 10-15 miles East of there, at least until we moved away in 3rd grade. It was hillbilly central then, and I'm sure the 30+ years haven't changed it much. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the guys involved was one of my old school chums.

The snake only looks to be 6 to 7 feet to me - which is about as big as male Boas get (females often hit 9 to 10 feet, record I think is a 12 foot girl owned by a zoo)

If you have to shoot a snake, use a shot gun or a revolver with snake shot rounds. Slugs and bullets have too high of a risk for bouncing and are generally inappropriate for the job.
The problem I have with discussing freedom is that people have been conditioned to expect "of me to tell you what to do" to follow it... inevitably they notice I don't ever get to that part, and they feel like I am trying to trick them.
Sometimes before replying to a topic, I think to myself: I am just so original!

No, but it's a rattlesnake, so slowly backing away and then running like hell is a perfectly effective defense
I figure it's an effective defense against ultra-slow boas, as well. No need to involve the truck if you're really that scared. More than likely, they thought they were being funny.

And to amend that, the only reason I would shoot a snake, is if I didn't have enough time to call an air strike on it.
