Installing 9
Hi -
Ok, I have a dual 1.25ghz Mac that can boot into OS 9.
Since I had an extra hard drive someone gave me, I thought I would install os 9 on it.
So I get out the OS9 disk, reboot to start up off the disk but for some odd reason it won't do it.
So I take the the hd out, put it in my old OS 9 Mac and install it from there. I apply all the updates,
up to 9.2.2. Take the hd out of it and put the hd back in my newer Mac.
Ok I can boot into OS 9. Now there is just one little problem. No audio.
It says the audio is in use by another app, but there is no other app using it.
So I can't figure out why there is no audio and why the 1.25ghz Mac won't boot from the OS 9 disk.
Specs -
dual 1.25 Ghz
1 gig ram
OS 10.5.x and OS 10.4.x and OS 9.2.2 (on separate hd's)

That is simply because Intel Macs simply will not run OS9. There are emulator softwares such as sheepshaver, but they aren't guaranteed to function at 100%

Mayhaps it only installed the software needed for the audio hardware in the Mac you did the installation on. Now that you've got it booting from OS 9, have you tried booting from the CD again? Dunno what might have changed, but it's worth a shot. Then you could try an upgrade or a whole reinstall.

If it was an intel machine it wouldn't have booted at all into 9.

Yeah I don't have an intel Mac.. yet.
I've tried booting off the CD again after I put the hd with OS 9 on it back in the 1.25 ghz Mac
but it still does the same thing. I see a folder with a ? over it for a few seconds then it just
boots into whatever the default boot drive is. I've tried holding down the "c" key even selected the
OS 9 disk as the startup disk, no luck.
I've removed the perfs folder, reboot and still no audio.
I'm not sure whats going on.
A bit puzzling..
Lol... yeah it would be a neat trick having an intel Mac boot OS 9. ;-)

What do you need 9 for?
A few weeks ago I reinstalled OS 9 onto my old iBook with a restore disc that came with my iMac G4 and my god.. I couldn't stand it! I can't believe we used to use that! It's amazing what has changed since then.
Now I wouldn't even give OS 9 to my worst enemy.

Well there are some software, mostly games, that do not run under OS 10.
So the only way to use it is in OS 9.
Also I just wanted to see how OS 9 preforms on a much faster
system,more ram and better graphic card than my old OS 9 mac.

Bingo.
Unlike OS X, the classic Mac OS installer only installs the parts of the OS needed to run the machine it's being installed on. (Unless you go way back to System 7.x, which had an option for universal installs).
The reason your OS 9 CD won't boot, might very well be that the G4/1.25 was the last Mac to boot OS 9, so it might need a very specific (9.1 or 9.2, even) Mac OS 9 version to boot. What version is your OS 9 install CD?

Correct. My DP500 G4 disk will only boot on other digital audio G4s. There are firmware checks in them. You'll need a retail OS 9 disk or the Universal OS 9 cd that were given to AASPs as part of their tool kits.

True, but even with retail CD's, for a 1.25 you'll want to be extra careful. Macs usually only boot the OS that was current at the time of their release, so a 1.25 might not boot 9.0 or even 9.1.

Okay, I looked it up. The 1.25 (MDD 2003) boots 9.2.2 only. So you'll likely need the CD that shipped with the machine to install classic Mac OS on it. I don't know if 9.2.2 retail CD's were ever shipped by Apple. OS 9 was pretty much dead by the time this machine shipped; it shipped alongside the G5's as the last option to run OS 9 on a new machine. Its direct predecessors, the FW800 G4's, couldn't boot OS 9.

Eekgods, you're correct...again. It's been so long that I looked at my AASP disks. I forgot there are like four different OS 9 cds covering the various generations. But I seem to recall the full 9.2.2 disk would boot anything that could run it.

Ahh.. peachy.
Yeah I forgot my old OS 9 mac (400 mhz PCI G4) had the soundblaster card for Mac's
installed. Might have to disable that first, if that will even solve it.
My version of the OS 9 disk is.. heh version 9.0, I got this disk a long time ago.
Well I got this Mac off of ebay, so no disks came with it.
Can one find a bootable/install 9.2.2 cd or can I make one ? if so, how and what do I need ?

As I said earlier, there was a time when you could create a boot disk for one Mac model on another model. Try digging around the options of the installer, you might find it. Even then, your OS 9 CD predates the machine you're trying to install on, so it might not have the necessary components on it.

Ahh, I see.
Well not really a big deal having a boot 9.2.2 disk.
If I could get the sound issue solved that would be great.
I wonder if Tome Viewer would help...

You should have an option to install a "universal" system in the custom install menu of the OS9 installer. This will dump everything into the install and that should work on any OS9 capable Mac.

Well I booted in to 10.4 and started up the classic mode, which it is using the "Classic HD" that I put OS 9 on, and the OS 9 installer to put a new copy of OS 9 on the drive, did a universal install.
Got that done then dragged over the extensions from the previous system folder along with the finder and other system stuff to bring it up to 9.2.2
so far so good. However still has the audio problem.
