Being somewhat of an old-timer (along with a lot of other die-hards here.. 8 years already, going on n 9 or 10 for some?)...
I'll throw in my 2 cents that it has been a combination of over-moderation, bad forum redesign (go back to the MacAddict outline before the change?), and the banning of people (again, over-moderation).

I don't know if I agree with over moderation ... but I do think some of them are ban happy.

Part of that has to do with the general committee nature of most bans, outside of pissing off a staffer or causing severe disruption to the board (which tends to piss off the available admins) there is generally a lot of discussion and consideration put into bans (including the posting history of the person) before they are sent up to the admins for implementation.

I guess my philosophy is that one thread getting out of hand doesn't necessitate banning someone ... particularly when there are many instigating a situation and only one or a few get bans. 
Though I am not a mod here (although I have been other places) so my opinion doesn't go far.
