So - Atlantis is going bye bye
As much of a stargate fan as I am - I can't say I'm disappointed.
The first season was great. Awesome. Loved it.
Second was OK - Ronin was a mistake.
The third season I think was better than 2nd - I'll have to re-watch them again and see.
Season 4 sucked - sorry, much as I like Amanda Tapping - the role she played just didn't cut it.
They did however add Jewel Staite - and she is doing a decent job.
Season 5 - I feel like I'm watching it just for the sake of watching it.
It seems like they are trying to pack too much in, resulting in too many details left out.
What was with that last episode?
Great story line - but come on, they should have made it a two episode story line.
They go to a wraith stronghold and there's not one single encounter with the wraith?
I guess the writers are probably getting somewhat bored with the whole thing.
I think it is largely Sci Fi Channel's fault.
Oh well.

Are you talking about the McKay episode? I liked it.
If you think they're trying to pack too much in, imagine if they'd tangled with the wraith on top of everything else that went on in that episode. That would have been a seriously rushed episode.
It's being canceled?

Yes - the last episode was a good story line, but either the planet should not have been a wraith stronghold - or it should have been two episodes so they could do it w/o it being over rushed.

Oh - and no, not being canceled as in no more this season - just no more seasons after this one.

There will be more Stargate
http://io9.com/5040764/stargate-univers … reen-light
A new spin-off show, Stargate Universe, has gotten the greenlight from the Sci Fi Channel. So we can expect a big 2-hour premiere in 2009, followed by a regular series.
Yes, the ship is called Destiny, what did you expect? It's Stargate — cheese is its bread and butter. The Hollywood Reporter claims that this Stargate will have a lot more space action aboard this ancient ship. Also, Destiny is programmed to take them across the galaxy, and they can't return home. Also, this series will be taking a deeper look into the origins of the Stargates.

I can't tell how many seasons there are/were - the episodes just happen in seemingly random order every so often on a couple of channels here. I guess it is supposed to be artistic or something.

Ronin is one of the best characters.
Tayla I can't stand though. I'm glad they got rid of the woman leader (the one that became a replicator), and even John could be fairly annoying.

Their problem I think is the same problem with species 8472 in Voyager. You can't have a super-powerful enemy, and just make episodes perpetually fighting that enemy, because that gets boring, but you can't defeat the enemy because they are super-powerful. I always thought the Wraith were a terrible enemy. IF you look at SG-1, it took them a while to really go head-to-head with the system lords, then they had to make up the replicators. They should have just kept to small, weak enemies while exploring new planets... they had a whole freaking galaxy worth of things to try, but they ruined it by making the wraith too powerful.

Thats show's been on for 5 years? How long has Stargate been on? 20? Gah, and it was all downhill after the mediocre Kurt Russel movie.

Re: So - Atlantis is going bye bye
Stargate SG1 had 10 seasons (plus two movies), season 8 of stargate coincided with season 1 of atlantis.
The kurt russel movie didn't have the best acting in the world, but it did have an incredible story, and that's what made the movie.

They threw in the towel when they put the hologram in charge.
Picardo is making a great effort at developing his character, but there's not much chance he's ever going to be very sympathetic after all those years of playing the bureaucratic idiot.
Aw, he's no fun, he fell right over.

This sucks. That show had so much promise, but fell flat on its face. They are already having the same issues SG1 did in the later seasons (ie poor storylines, halfhearted acting, etc). Seems like the wrong people got in control.

They sure know how to put on a wrestling gig though.
Teal'c and Ronon in a cage match team against Kronos and Michael
That would have fit in with the direction that the "sci fi" channel is going.

Re: So - Atlantis is going bye bye
Ford was better, so was Dr. Beckett compared to the replacements. And I'm liking Woolsey better than Carter in the leadership position (bringing Carter in was such a cheap ploy to try to get higher ratings...and no I'm not a psycho Weir fan, I didn't really care about her character as she was mostly just there to connect the dots for the plot). I'm liking season 5 better than 4 since they seem to be handling the character development a little better than they were after they decided to screw with the characters in season 2-4. (How many times do we have to reset McKay's character? it reminds me of what happened in Enterprise during season 3)
I think it is a shame they're canceling it at season 5. It should of had at least one more season to round off the character development. Instead they're jumping on the Battlestar Galactica bandwagon (Stargate Universe). With the new show they're going for a "younger audience" and "more character development." I'm sorry but how do they reconcile those two? The younger audience hated how Battlestar turned into West Wing in Space and constantly complain about the lack of space battles (oh, they're putting more of those into Universe as well). I'm not hopeful at all.
In my opinion SG1 killed Atlantis. They billed Atlantis as being Stargate but cast out into an unknown and hostile universe (essentially a reboot). But that got boring so by season 2 they had SG1 and their battlecruisers fly in. That wasn't enough so they how have laser beams pew pewing the wraith. If they would have kept SG1 out of it or even ended SG1 when O'Neill left I think Atlantis would have not suffered in season 2-4. (And I think they realized this since the Daedalus almost never shows up anymore.)
So I don't hold much hope that they claim to be doing a reboot yet again (but this time they're even farther away! so they have less chance of having help from earth...right...)

That theme worked so WELL for Voyager.
