A dust bunny metropolis lives in my 6 year old iMac G4!

Dave (My brother) went off to college on Tuesday. Today I decided to get my hands on his iMac G4 and see what's up.

For a long time it's been acting like crap. Dave said it was probably full of dust.

So I got the tools and set up a nice towel on the floor and set off to get myself inside...

What followed when I cracked the base open was a hell from which I barely escaped. As a cloud of dust as big as the Sahara desert rushed around me... when it finally settled, I found this...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3115/2830553729_fc2bfce6dc.jpg

eek I blanket of dust bunnies if they were the population of China and Japan covers the entire thing.

Closer...

I think I'm going to have to move this project outside. Or get the vacuum in here. I'll do it after work, or tomorrow when it's light out. My God.

Will post more pictures when I get back inside again.

I think I might have to do a total tear down. (I have the manual. But not the "servicing stand".) Anyone know where I can buy thermal paste? The manual says to reapply it. And even though it's 6 years old, I'd like to follow this instruction.

Re: A dust bunny metropolis lives in my 6 year old iMac G4!

Unless your vacuum is designed specifically for electronics, you stand a good chance of zapping the innards of that iMac with an electrostatic charge that builds up in many standard vacuum cleaners. Instead, if you can attach the hose as to the output so that it can be used as a blower instead, you might use that to blow away those dust bunnies (although you still should not get the vacuum cleaner's attachments anywhere close to your iMac's parts).

You should be able to get thermal paste from any electronics store: Fry's, Radio Shack, etc.

Sounds like a better idea. Blowing instead. I'll do that.

It's just sitting on the floor on a towel waiting right now. This might be a project I'll have to do on my next day off.

Just to be on the safe side, make sure to ground yourself properly after handling that vacuum cleaner and before you pick up any of those iMac parts. Just a reminder.

Oh, yeah don't worry.

This thing is so old, it's just going to end up being another old Mac from the last 10 years I don't even use. Along with my iBook G3 and my Bondi iMac G3.

Buy a big can of compressed air. Don't use a vacuum, either sucking or blowing, they build up way too much static.

Re: A dust bunny metropolis lives in my 6 year old iMac G4!

Well, I probably made a huge tiny mistake. I got it clean as I could last night. It will never be 100% clean. That smoke is pretty much sealed to the casing. But I got rid of the bunnies.

Sadly now that I have it all back together, it won't turn back on. I don't know why. I can't tell if I forgot to hook something up, I don't think I did, I remember connecting and making sure of everything.

I'd go back in, but god dammit! The four screws that hold the base on are a size slightly larger than the closest torx I have. So now they're all stripped. Meaning the case is sealed forever. Unless I take a drill to it. Which I won't.

The catch 22 is if I hadn't opened it up, it would have died soon anyway. But I don't know if it's dead. I think it was a loose connection. Ugh! I gotta get back inside!

Also while I was cleaning the fan, I broke off one of the blades. Ugh! What the hell? It's dirty as hell on the outside and in, it's 6 years old, it's dying slowly. But I love it. I can't let it go! And no one will ever buy it.

Re: A dust bunny metropolis lives in my 6 year old iMac G4!

An which one would be used for the iMac G4?

Also... I think I remembered what I forgot to do. I forgot to connect the two power supply units together. I don't remember reconnecting them. I remember disconnecting them, but not reconnecting them.

I think. But I can't do anything about it because I can't even get inside.

Is that what you use when you have screwed the situation and want to unscrew it?

Tiny drops of superglue (careful!) and a couple of Phillips-head screws small enough to fit in the stripped Torx heads will fix your case-opening problem.

Re: A dust bunny metropolis lives in my 6 year old iMac G4!

I already got it thanks. I found a Torq of the exact size I needed that fit in the hole perfectly. It's not a bit so I couldn't use it on my power drill, I had to use my arms and manually rotate the screwdriver. *sigh* Around and around my arms went to get them out and back in. All that work. What good is technology if I still ended up using my hands? /sarcasm tongue

I was right. It was indeed the power supply. I knew I didn't connect it back up. I remembered specifically having to separate them so when I replayed the reassembly in my head I remembered not plugging it back in. Funny it was easier to disassemble and reassemble the second time. I don't see why this is a hated design. It was easier to work with than the G3 iMac's I've taken apart. And lighter too.

I cleaned out my G4 tower the day I opened it and put a new hard drive in. Of course my tower sits on the floor, where the dog fur and dust collect.

Re: A dust bunny metropolis lives in my 6 year old iMac G4!

Well, this dust is comprised mostly of marijuana. The inside is completely stained. The outside is no longer white. And because of my stupidity of needing to look at my PDF manual to open it up and not realizing my fingers were covered in black dust that might as well have been toner, my MacBook's brand new topcase almost permanently turned black too.

The anti-static mat: sure, a wise choice for anyone working with electronics.

The wrist strap: I would rather not. While I would not want to lose electronics due to frying it with a static charge, there is something about working with electrical equipment (especially capacitors) and possibly using my body as a discharge path that makes me nervous. While I could--with considerable financial pain--replace my computer, that cost (for me) is rather less than the one for replacing myself. I would rather be careful and just remember to discharge myself relative to my equipment.

Re: A dust bunny metropolis lives in my 6 year old iMac G4!

My impression is that electronics aren't as sensible as that.... At least considering the handeling : faillure rate my  friends and I have had. Maybe we've just been lucky, but it's been over ten years of tinkering.
edit: I do touch the sink or the central heating for discharging myself though.

I open up & clean out my G4 tower every now and again to avoid the dust bunny colony formation.  As as per the smoke residue... that's why you shouldn't smoke (herb, or otherwise) near your computers.

As for the case discoloration, try a Mr. Clean Eraser. It works magic more often than not, and it won't make it worse.
