iPod AND iPhone?!

First, I'm a brand new owner of a Mac.  I've been preaching Macs since high shool, and now in my senior year of undergrad, I've finally got a MacBook!  So I'm very excited!

Second, I'm new to this forum, so this may or may not have been discussed.  My preliminary search for this topic was unconclusive...but I digress.

Anyway, I belive that being a Mac believer means that you subscribe the lifestyle that corresponds with it as well.  Which brings me to the iPod/iPhone.

I have decided to get the iPhone.  At first, I was very disappointed with Apple because the phone wouldn't support picture messaging.  But then I had an epiphany-I hardly ever recieve or send picture messages.  So this is an feature that I won't necessarily miss. 8GB is probably enough for me.  My music collection isn't very large at all.  However, I know that collection will and does expand.  Do I really want all of that on my iPhone?  And what of this mystery 32GB iPhone?

This brings me to the iPod.  If I don't plan on putting a significant amount of music or pictures or movies on my iPhone, that leaves me with the option of the iPod.  Aren't most home dock radios compatible with the iPod and not the iPhone? I saw an ad for a radio that will utilize both, but I hardly think that this is the norm.

Which brings me to my dilema.  Do I really want to carry two devices?

Which brings me to this forum.  Do you carry two devices?  Do you know anyone who carries two devices?  Am I better off with one or the other?  Should I purchase my iPhone now, or wait for the 32GB if I'm not going to carry two devices?

Thanks.

Re: iPod AND iPhone?!

I've got 55gb of music on my computer. I personally like to have it all at my fingure tips so I have a 60gb iPod that holds it all. I also have a 16gb white iPhone. I usually carry both on me. Sometimes I will just leave my iPod in the car, but I Always leave home with both.

The bigger problem that I have is that I only have a 1st gen MacBookPro to sync them to. It only has a 100gb hard drive. I have to keep my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on an external drive because they are too big to fit on the internal drive. It's something you may want to be aware of when choosing the laptop as your only computer. Make sure the hard drive is big enough.

Re: iPod AND iPhone?!

I'll still have my PC.

You dont' think its cumbersome to carry around two devices?

And is your collection split between the two?

Re: iPod AND iPhone?!

I've got about 300GB of tunes, so there will always be something that's on neither my iPod nor my iPhone when I need it! These days, my 60GB iPod lives in my car, which I rarely drive, but I love having a nice chunk of music there when I do.

I can deal with my lowly 8GB iPhone, tho it's always bothered me that I can't sync my iPhone at home AND at work like I could with my iPod. That makes it rough when I'm at work and want to drop a new album on my phone to listen to on my train ride/walk home but I can't because my phone is synced to my home computer. Since you haven't gotten an iPhone yet, you may just think "well, then turn off the sync" but you'd be mistaken. It just doesn't work the same for some reason. I recently found a solution and it seems to be working.

One more stupid missing feature no longer missing. I don't really use MMS either, but it sure would be nice to have the option.

Re: iPod AND iPhone?!

depends on what I need I keep a few albums on my Sony phone, a few audiobooks on my 2gb nano, and a mix of music and movies or photos on the iPod touch. The nano stays in the truck.

Re: iPod AND iPhone?!

I have both a 60 GB iPod and a 16 GB iPhone.  I rarely, if ever, use the iPod.  But I refuse to get rid of it until I can replace both it and my iPhone with one device.

I like having a back-up of all of my music on a separate device.

The only reason that I ever use my iPod is because I have some smart playlists on it, that automatically populate with music that I do not have on my iphone.

The smart playlists on my iPhone automatically populate with tracks that I have recently listened to.

So basically, if I ever want something new on my iPhone, I just play the iPod for a couple of hours in my iHome clock radio.

And you're right that not all iPod accessories work with iPhone.  This is because of the GSM signal of the phone.  You can still use your iPhone with these items though--Just put it into airplane mode.
