everlong, Obama, as far as I understand, has NEVER played the race card in this entire campaign. If you can show me a direct quote of him (not some teevee blowhard) actually doing it, I'll eat my words.

Additionally, except for the sweetie gaffe, the same holds true for the "sexist card?" as well.

Can you show otherwise?

If not STFU.

I read that quote as basically shutting down discussions of race in the campaign. I thought it was smart. He didn't accuse anyone of anything, he preemptively stopped them from doing so.

Can Gov Palin say she's a hockey mom without playing the gender card ?  You're saying Obama can't point out he's black ?

You think members of the Republican Party and their assorted media friends haven't said anything racist about Obama ?!

Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.  Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."  They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

It was claimed that Obama hadn't played the race card and evidence was demanded.
I provided it.

Which is where the word "preemptively" comes in.

ruh-roh ... the battle for Congress suddenly looks competitive.

Or is it? They're using "generic" party preference numbers. How useful is that?

Actually, Hillary/Rendell went there. . . right here in good ol' Pittsburgh. Now Ed was making what he felt was a statement of fact regarding the FACT that there are a lot of people who aren't willing to vote for a black man.

Additionally, it IS a fact that there are many who aren't willing to vote for a black man. Race IS very much an issue. Obama has been most excellent in not dwelling on it, in not making it a theme in his campaign, and talking about differences being an issue for everyone.

I don't think that qualifies as the "race card".

The bottom line however, is even if that one instance was playing the race card (and it's not clear), the fact remains that the-anti-playing-any-card™ party is now playing the omgsexism card OVER AND OVER AND OVER in situations where it's utterly and transparently laughable.

Basically it all makes the past couple decades conservative shibboleth about card playing one big massive steaming pile of horse smurf, so I can't even take Kevin's screeching on this subject.

Re: Dems having second thoughts on nomination?

Granted, nary a campaign has passed without ad hominen nonsense. However, the media as it is today is quite a different animal than any time prior. In many ways.

Here's a comment I found over MDN just a couple min. ago about the second Bill&Jerry ad:

A new, painful pair of shoes that you finally break in and get used to. The crazy relative that you learn to live with. Your bedroom, your house, your family - warts and all. You don't really want to change.

That's what this ad was about.

People can adapt to and tolerate discomfort. Consider Windows, consider the political situation of the last 8 years. You don't want scary, new change. Stay with the same old pain.

Just so.

I'm merely making the statement that Obama's run a clean campaign and not played the race or sex card, with the possible exception of the "sweetie" gaffe. . . which was just a gaffe. . . and I'll certainly allow that you provided an example which I responded to with my opinion.

Re: Dems having second thoughts on nomination?

"Sweetie" is a common thing.

Lord, I was about 12 when out of nowhere I began using "Dearie" instead of 'Mom'.  After a bit, others, including adults, called her "Dearie".

It is not a gaffe. If anything, it speaks of a common touch. You know, the other end of elitist.

To be honest, I could kiss the ground Obama walks on for his masterful speech on race. It truly was one of the best on the topic I've ever heard. I forced both my girls to watch it in it's entirety. If they would all talk with such honesty about all our issues I can't imagine the heights America could reach.
That said, the guy is still a politician and has more flaws and warts than a witch in a Grimm's tale and I dislike most of his platform.

Seriously, and back to subject at hand,k of course the words and how someone takes them is subjective. The words that Norah O'donnell  referenced as being sexist, certainly could be viewed by some as sexist. ANd she did in fact view them that way. When reading them, and hearing her interpretation one could certainly come to the conclusion that Obama was speaking in a sexist language. Was it intentional? WHo knows. Maybe his sweetie was not a gaffe, but how he talks reflexively, and those looking for sexist language find the way he talks sexist, but he himself doesn't feel in fact that he is so. Doesn't mean though that Norah is off base in her characterization either.

Look. How many truck drivers says "Thanks, darlin' " after the waitress pours a coffee? I'd bet a few say, "Thanks, Sweetie". Or, 'Darlin''.

The net defintion says "gaffe": faux pas: a socially awkward or tactless act

Jeezzzzz....it's not a gaffe. Get a real issue.

Now, that nutjob neoKrautHammer is saying the impecalby credentialed Mr. Charles Gibson of ABCNews 'gaffed' when pressing Palin about the preemption in Iraq. He claims that there are 'at least four versions. It's changed over time.'

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co … inionsbox1

So, is his rewriting the singemindedness of Iraq and preemption valid? Because I just stated that it always means Iraq. So far.

Is so, does that mean Gibson Gaffed?
