my WIDESCREEN monitor WON'T play HALO

I may have exceeded my video card capabilities?

The monitor: ViewSonic WM2230wm (set at 1680x1050)

The Mac: G4 dual 867, Tiger 10.4.11, 2GB, GeForce4 MX

No matter what screen resolution I set it too all I get is total screen distortion with no discernible picture, no mouse or keyboard control and a difficult escape.

This is just in Halo? If the G4's display is operating normally otherwise, then it's the game, not the video card.

You have an older system. Have you tried lowering the quality of the graphics settings inside Halo itself? You mentioned changing the resolution of your monitor, but for all I know you might just be talking about System Preferences -> Displays instead of the settings in Halo itself.

Mac Halo supports widescreen rezzes up to 2560x1600, tho it'd be unplayably slow on a GF4 MX set that high.

Re: my WIDESCREEN monitor WON'T play HALO

I've had a few games launch and the image was distorted. So I quite or force quit in some cases, then
on relaunch I held down the command key to bring up a setting window (check or make changes).
That usually helps it.

Sometimes I had to into the game and make changes there.

One thing you could try is trashing or moving Halo's pref file and relaunch the game.

It's possible that, if you're running the Universal Binary version and haven't patched it to the latest version, there could be problems. When did you buy it, and is it patched?

Re: my WIDESCREEN monitor WON'T play HALO

I had that problem with Halo on my G4 mac mini.  It's because the actual game resolution is set to an incompatible resolution and refresh rate.  Use the Halo setup program and start with something safe life 800x600 at 60Hz.
