Nintendo Unveils New DS

The new gaming system will come with 2 cameras, music functionality, and be even thinner

Following rumors that had been circulating throughout the last week, Nintendo confirmed reports that it was giving its best-selling handheld gaming console, the Nintendo DS, a facelift.  Nintendo President Satoru Iwata was on hand to announce the new unit at Nintendo's Fall Press Conference.  With the new handheld, Nintendo looks to continue in its successes thinking outside the usual gaming box.

The new unit, called the "DSi" will keep the trademark double-screen (DS), while expanding the screens to 3.5 inches, a 17 percent increase in size.  Like Apple's iPods, Nintendo is cramming more into a smaller space, fitting the jumbo new screens into a package that's 12 percent thinner than the previous DS.  The general look of the handheld is otherwise relatively unchanged, with the stylus being perhaps slightly larger.

One major omission is the scrapping of the GBA cartridge port, likely to help cut the size down and make room for the bigger screens in the thinner body.  Fans of backwards compatibility will have to turn to their old DS's and the defunct Game Boy Advance for their GBA gaming fix.

Cool. I wont have to feel guilty about keeping my NES style SP when I finally pop for a DS variant.

Re: Nintendo Unveils New DS

I didn't get a GBA SP to replace my GBA, and this doesn't look like enough of an upgrade to replace my DS lite, IMO.

Re: Nintendo Unveils New DS

I did get an SP to replace my GBA, mostly because the GBA's screen was terrible in normal light situations -- even by original Game Boy standards.  This, however, seems like more of a tweak than an upgrade.

Seconded. Unless the big N comes out with a killer app (and I do mean killer) for it, I don't think I'd get one.

Re: Nintendo Unveils New DS

They are worried about losing to the PSP in Japan yet all they do is add 2 cameras, new thinner body, and larger screens? Yep, sounds like another Nintendo move to try and milk more out of a system that should be upgraded. Probably will sell a ton in Japan tho as I bet it will include some killer app for the camera that the Japanese will just crave.

I'd consider one, if the DS still had games I wanted to play...

Re: Nintendo Unveils New DS

I suspect cameras, and browser aren't the only accessory integrations. There may well be more system memory and a built-in rumble feature isn't completely out of the realm of possibility (though admittedly might be hard to implement for them to omit). Guitar Hero: On Tour is the one DS game I can figure out that you actually get screwed over. Some of the less official accessories like the Action Replay will no doubt be released as new versions which can be used in both the DS & the DSi However.

Re: Nintendo Unveils New DS

Ya it will probably have some boosted memory to handle stored pictures/etc unless the camera mode is enabled only with a special DS cart which handles all that.

Oh come on. No where in my quote did I say it exactly cloned the ipod or iphone feature for feature. If that is your defense of this then that is pretty sad. I said it was a reactionary move against Apple. Why do you think they're calling it a "third" product? It is nintendo's way of saying it isn't really finished and they'll have a better one out soon.

Nice that they took one good thing about the DS and removed it. Blah.
