MacBook Brick?

Just a rumor, tho its source[s] insist it's true. Good if it is, tho seemingly wasteful of material (here's to recycling):

Every time a new Apple press event is announced, the speculation runs rampant. This time the press event isn’t even announced and speculation is brewing quickly.

According to 9to5mac, Apple will unveil new MacBooks at a press event to be held on October 14. The fact that new MacBooks are supposed to be coming is only half the rumor. What's making some of the biggest waves is the report that the new MacBook cases will be machined out of one solid chunk of aluminum.

The system is already being called the MacBook Brick as an ode to the solid brick-like metal chunk the new and revolutionary process is said to start with. The Brick is cut out with lasers and jets of water to produce a one piece, seamless case for the new MacBook systems.

The new manufacturing process is supposed to make design changes faster and allow Apple to reap cost savings, which will drive the price of the Mac notebooks down. 9to5mac says its source insists that the rumor of the new manufacturing system for the MacBook computers is accurate.

Structural strength would be much improved. Hopefully some 'waste' metal could be recycled easily via filter. Oh, and you can likely haz new chips with those. Now if only tech bloggers would learn the proper use of apostrophes, and the world economy wasn't melting down like aluminum in a laser...

Re: MacBook Brick?

No matter how good it could be, I doubt they'd use something that doesn't make money. The new Macs should cost less to make.

If the rumor is real.

I want my 10" MacBook Touch.

Re: MacBook Brick?

Machined aluminum waste is almost always reclaimed since it costs 25 times the energy to process bauxite and is also more economical to obtain.

Re: MacBook Brick?

This isn't machining in the older sense, tho. When lasers are involved, instead of dust, you get vapor.

Re: MacBook Brick?

There are still chunks of metal left from the machining process whether its with done the laser, water, or mechanical tool. I'll admit the is less dust to reclaim with laser but there is still plenty of reclaimable material.

Re: MacBook Brick?

Marketing wise, that sounds like a terrible choice of name. In electronics, "bricking" something means to take something that was working and make it stop working (with a firmware upgrade gone awry, for example). It can also convey a sense of being heavy, which isn't desirable for a laptop. I'm doubting the legitimacy of this rumor, because I believe Apple's marketing department is smarter than that.

Re: MacBook Brick?

I doubt it's the official name from Apple. It's probably only what the thing is currently being called by the tech community.

Re: MacBook Brick?

Yeah, I don't think that's the official name, either.  Anyway, this case sounds pretty sweet.

iPods were melting a few minutes ago. What now?

Hmm... iPod touch. Looks like a smooth case.

Well, wouldn't any source insist that what they're publishing as truth, was actually true?

true.  I believe this one because it's both plausible and far from earth shattering.

Re: MacBook Brick?

Evidently "Brick" is the codename of the project. I guess as in smashing Windows? Wasn't the codename of the new nanos "Rainbow"? To signify the increase of colors available.

Re: MacBook Brick?

Macs run Windows and Apple has made it clear that it's not Windows that they're competing with. They're trying to smash the competition of other PC makers.

Yet their prices stay the same.

*sigh*

But I do look forward to the new MacBooks. Can't wait! Next year is my "New computer" year.
