It's cominnnnnggg....
Stay Calm
By now, many people have noticed that Bungie.net is offline, replaced with the aborted countdown we last saw during E3. This time, the countdown ends at 7:07 am PT tomorrow - what will we get when it reaches zero? Stay tuned to find out! Update: Pkmnrulz240 pointed out that the site is NOT offline, as it seems; it's simply... hidden. Update 2: Okay, I'm dumb. It's not offline, the main site isn't hidden; I missed the giant "Continue to Bungie.net" link in the upper right corner. Nothing to see here... move along. (Louis Wu 02:18:25 UTC) (permalink)

Well, actually... the E3-style countdown continues, currently at 00:07:14:44. Looks like Bungie's big, delayed announcement arrives this morning. 7:07 PST, I'd say.

NAG's just being a grump. It is the one-year anniversary for H3, but there's no big event like E3 going on for a big reveal. Teaser's good. And even NAG likes ONI.

Prepare to Drop
The countdown has ended, and the reveal is... staggering. A new teaser trailer, filled with win. I won't spoil it for you, but I WILL tell you that there is a TON of information in this one. This will be picked over, frame by frame, but the Halo faithful - but even a first watching should get your blood pumping. It's available on Bungie.net, of course (WMP9 and QuickTime, served up from speedy Microsoft hosts), and shortly on Xbox Live Marketplace, in glorious HD. If, for whatever reason, you can't get to Bungie.net, the download links are here:
QuickTime: 180p (13.5 mb) | 360p (33.2 mb) | 720p (66.7 mb)
WMP9: 180p (5.2 mb)| 360p (12.0 mb) | 720p (47.9 mb)
Watch it... and start discussing! (Louis Wu 14:10:03 UTC) (permalink)
Stupid, or filled with win? You make the call.

To me this looks perfectly in line with that squad-based ODST game idea of not long ago. Practice your Nathan Fillion accents and prepare to drop, uh-huh!

Taking a look at all the new achievements for H3, I am assuming that it's a new map pack/campaign levels for H3... not an entirely new product.

Not unlikely. DLC utilizing much of what you already have. Just keep the price and install size reasonable and I'm happy.

I agree, but branding it as "Halo 3" doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.
Especially when it looks like it might be taking place during the Covenant invasion of Earth, which was mostly in Halo 2.
But I guess if it's DLC for Halo 3, it should carry its name even if it doesn't have much to do with it.
And because of that, I'm assuming that this video is in no way connected with Peter Jackson's thing?
When the hell are we going to get some solid info on that?

> Just some trivia there for everyone.
I also hear there is a website devoted to the game by some guy in Scottlande or someplace. They say he's really crazy 'cuz his wife went into labor the day Marathon came out an she wouldn't let him go to the shoppe and buy it so when they got home from th hospital he cut her up and buried her in the yard and then ate his own baby with some chips, oh delicious chips. So they caught him but he managed to get his copy of Marathon and smuggled it into prison with him and the other convicts tried to take it away from him in the shower so he cut them up and ate them to, in fact he went on a rampage and ate all the prison guards with some chips, oh delicious chips. And then he sat down at the warden's desk and played the game straight through only stopping when he had to pee in a potted plant in the corner of the room. After he finished the game he found the prison surrounded by the Army and there was a guy on a bullhorn named Dr. Quartermass who was telling him to put down the fork and come out. But he managed to escape through the sewers and they couldn't catch him but they found his bag of chips, oh delicious chips. They say he's still hiding to this day in the mountains of Scotchland, the Alpes, updating his website every day using a portable microwave dish and a laptop. They also say of your are backpacking in the Alpes that you'd better not carry any chips, oh delicious chips. They say they'll never catch him to because there are laws that protect mountain people and the police are scared to go up there. But he has to come to a city once a month on the seventh day and he breaks into a house that has a computer and he plays Marathon straight through and he eats anyone at home with chips, oh delicious chips. So the police are hoping to catch him when he goes to the city but so far he's eaten over 3,000 people and 2,920 bags of chips, oh delicious chips so it seems like there is no stopping him. You may think I'm making all this up but it's the tru7h and I know it cause I asked my friend who works at Bungie and he said it's true so it is.

Yeah, if Bungie was going to show that at E3, I totally understand why Microsoft said that that was ridiculous and no we're not showing anything at the press conference.
Pre-empt complete games ready to sell at full retail for Q4 for a teaser of... DLC? Expanded campaign is the rumor out there based on the description when you download the video on Marketplace.

They've had plenty of time to think of good things to put in, and 4-way XBL co-op of cool events parallel to and following MC's adventures Earthside sound like fun. There's a lot to flesh out, making the trilogy closer to what it might've been if planned out and executed with foresight. Nobody knew what the universe would grow into, or that it would eventually stretch to 3 games. Story integration could benefit a fair amount; let's hope. I'm not sure we know the extent of this, might be more to come after this. Long as it's good and doesn't violate canon or get stale, I'm OK.
And because of that, I'm assuming that this video is in no way connected with Peter Jackson's thing?

Wish I knew, but I'll have fun with this while waiting.

Re: It's cominnnnnggg....
Fans tackle new trailer with passion
There's no way at all I'm going to be able to keep up with all the interesting speculation and analysis around the net today. I'll point out a few useful bits, and then you're on your own.
• Gabe Hammond uploaded a copy of the trailer to YouTube, if you can't download a version from Microsoft.
• Jordan117 did a frame-by-frame walkthrough on our forum.
• Painkilla05 put up some interesting notes (including the observation that the final drop pod seen in the teaser is actually not the final drop pod at all, and a wonderful map showing the locations of all mentioned city neighborhoods on a New Mombasa grid) over at Podtacular.
• thebruce (of Unfiction fame) has posted a Flickr stream containing all of the significant frames in the trailer - this might be the easiest way to find specific content. (In the time it's taken me to get this post online, he's started a thread on our forum.)
• Everyone and their brother (I'm talking about gaming websites, not individual fans) is interpreting the multiple references to '01/06/09' as evidence that Bungie will release this new project on January 6, 2009. This is, of course, possible - but you also need to remember that the text being interpreted is ostensibly coming from an AI in Kenya, which uses the dd/mm/yy syntax for dates; we could be talking about June 1, 2009. And it might not be a release date at all. More when we know it.
• Minor detail, but worth noting - SketchFactor apologizes for any confusion over the 'Maddie, where are you?' line in the trailer; it's an unfortunate coincidence, but has nothing whatsoever to do with Madeleine McCann, the four-year-old British child who disappeared in Portugal in May, 2007.
There has been quite a bit more than this - but again, keeping up with specific collections is past my capabilities today. Poke around... and enjoy yourself! This isn't supposed to be a chore, or a frustrating exercise - this is supposed to be fun! (Louis Wu 17:46:40 UTC) (permalink)

Microsoft's Halo team - and info on Bungie's next reveal
I wasn't going to post this, because much of the information (Payton, Yu, etc) had already been circulated... but then we got a tidbit I hadn't seen before. So: Edge Online (thanks, Michael Smith), along with ShackNews and Joystiq (thanks, bentllama) are reporting that Microsoft is confirming some of the new, big hires of the internal Halo team at Microsoft Game Studios: Ryan Payton, who worked on Metal Gear Solid 4, is heading up the Peter Jackson Halo project, working alongside Ex-Gearbox programmer Corrine Yu, her husband Kenneth Scott, formerly of Id, David Wu, from Pseudo Interactive, and Frank O'Connor, formerly of Bungie. (And, as we now know, Nathan 'bentllama' Walpole, also formerly of Bungie.) A pretty all-star team! Edge also confirms that there will be a major announcement from Bungie at next week's Tokyo Game Show, with reference to the recently released 'KEEP IT CLEAN' teaser. Re: It's cominnnnnggg....
The Ascendant Justice blog takes a detailed look at the recent trailer.
Definite spoiler country.
===============
Although the foreground of this first shot is what might initially catch one’s eye, the real story lies in its background. In the distance, beyond what appears to be a large body of water, we see another extension of this metropolis – a large city at the base of a space tether. The city here is in flames, clearly the result of some unseen force. Large plumes of smoke billow into the air, devouring the orange glow of afternoon sunlight, painting a bleak scene for the inhabitants of the city.
...
Here, we see a slew of HEVs falling into the azure atmosphere of a planet, their outer-armor engulfed in fire by the compression of air against their heat shields. Given that the ODST squads are only deployed in the most dire of circumstances, it would seem that there might be something critically important about the cityscape that we just saw. The serene, but haunting shot of a coastal metropolis conveys that these ODST units are dropping into a war zone.

I'm guessing possibly 4 minigames, each with a separate squad, and all your Firefly faves reprising their voiceovers. Lotsa variety, but just a guess that fits with the 4-way co-op and 16 drop pods.

It's almost heeeere...
Bungie has several projects underway within the studio, one of which is a brand new campaign experience for Halo 3 that we teased two weeks ago. Now, at long last, we can lift the shroud of secrecy and shed a little more light on what we've been working on.
We'll have more to say later, but for now, check out our official announcement trailer which builds upon the teaser and provides new insights into what awaits next Fall.
As always, multiple download flavors are available here for your furious clicking fingers:

Additionally, you can view an HD 5.1 version via Xbox LIVE marketplace.
Stay tuned to Bungie.net for the latest information about our next project.

Halo 3: Recon
A few weeks ago, the KEEP IT CLEAN teaser was released on Bungie.net - and then there was nothing. No comments from Bungie, no explanations... nothing. Until tonight. The Tokyo Game Show keynote kicked off at noon, October 9 - which translates to 8 PM PST October 8, or 11 PM EST October 8 (about an hour ago). The Halo material was all shown in the last 15 minutes - the first half was Halo Wars (the Flood was revealed as another enemy you'll fight in the game), and then the new Bungie trailer was unveiled. You can download it for yourself, at Bungie.net, in a variety of flavors, or in 5.1 goodness from Xbox LIVE Marketplace - but it'll tell you that the new game is called 'Halo 3: Recon', it will be available next fall (Fall 2009), and it will show you the fight from the viewpoint of an ODST Marine. There's plenty more speculation and information on our forum at the moment - jump in! Update: The Recon page in Bungie's Projects section contains an acronym - who will be the first to decipher 'WHVIDLDSHBYJSDO'? Update 2: If the trailer wasn't enough for you, check out the Xbox.com page on the product (thanks, Naburu). (Louis Wu 04:13:28 UTC) (permalink)

Re: It's cominnnnnggg....
OK, a year off is almost almost here, and fears about violating canon in Halo wars turned out to be true...
but, we can look forward to
All-new campaign content: The Halo 3: Recon campaign is an intriguing side story that takes place during the terrifying events leading up to the Master Chief’s return to New Mombasa in Halo 3. Experience the fate of Earth from the brand-new perspective of a special forces ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Trooper), adding a unique outlook and new gameplay elements to the events that unfold in the trilogy’s finale. While the feel of this new chapter greatly resembles that of previous Halo experiences, Halo 3: Recon will require you to employ more elements of stealth and cunning than ever before.
Prepare to drop: Known for their courage, valor and, at times, insanity, ODSTs are among the fiercest UNSC soldiers, priding themselves on being the first unit deployed into hostile situations. While not as large or supernaturally gifted as their Spartan comrades, these "Hell Jumpers" more than compensate with their ferocious attitudes and unwavering nerve.
Expanded multiplayer collection:No Halo experience would be complete without groundbreaking multiplayer content, and Halo 3: Recon gives fans more of what they love. With exclusive new maps and expanded Forge options, Xbox LIVE® Gold members will find more multiplayer content than ever before with Halo 3: Recon.
Ever-growing community options: Enjoy all the great Halo 3 technological innovations, including Saved Films, screenshots, Campaign Scoring, and four-player co-op. All of the new multiplayer maps fully support the Forge editor, offering endless gameplay customization possibilities.

Re: It's cominnnnnggg....
Pretty sure I saw a suppressor on one gun, too. Quiet, stealth.
In other news, I keep getting new lines lately... wish I could remember 'em all. Other unique stuff too, after a year+. I got a chick Marine to the end of Tsavo Highway as my Wraith turret gunner, and she said something like "I just saw my life flash before my eyes... which reminds me, Chief, you still owe me five credits from last week." Chicks...

Later last night she said "grenade out" when the drones came in during The Storm, and it was one of two friendly fire incidents that kiboshed my first run at scoring there. Earlier, I saw a major flash early, and realized a Phantom had somehow been shot down (!), well before the Scarab appeared. I still have to look at a film from Monday to figure out how the AA gun got asploded when I was nowheres near.
Oh, and I did turn scoring on for both a little earlier. With just my faves (you know, the one Gold and 3 Silvers), I sailed thru Tsavo Highway with over 18k. I did jump the Hog and use the tribarrel to good effect there.
