Call of Duty 4: anyone play it yet?

I just received in the mail the Call of Duty 4 for Mac. Wondering if anyone is playing it?

My copy just arrived today.  Copying it to my hard disk (which, if you read the EULA, is in direct violation of the license agreement, despite the instructions on the CD when you open it on your computer telling you to do just that...sigh...) now!  big_smile

Well, yes...whatever.

Anyway, this game is quite fun.  It looks like smurf at a non-native resolution on my iMac (2.8 GHz Core 2 Extreme 24", 2GB RAM) screen, forcing me to run it at 1920x1200.  It runs fine at that resolution as long as I disable some of the pretty effects like depth of field and smoke smoothing.  I hope they update it frequently in an effort to improve performance.

Infinity Ward has given up on cod4 already I believe. The PS3 version has many bugs in it that IF refuses to correct.

The series won't die or even slow down. The next is in the works, back to WWII... maybe IF is already churning out MW's sequel.

I'm glad they're going back the their roots. There's just a certain appeal to WWII.

Anything much more modern easily starts to sound like right-wing propaganda.

Not exactly going back to their roots. Call of Duty is made by two different companies so that they can churn the games out faster. So COD5 is going to feel a lot more like 3, and why cod 4 feels a lot more like 2 (well, except the whole modern thing)

A look at Treyarch's CoD: World at War, next up in the series.

The co-operative gameplay on the PC, on the other hand, is new and more strategic in nature. Yes, there will be voice available through the client (according to a Treyarch rep overseeing the action). In the co-op game, four players play the allies. The setting for the two maps were in the Pacific Theater. The scenarios were within the campaign setting and yes, in co-op the difficulty is ramped up measurably.

You will fall in with some AI-controlled NPCs, and they work fine, but most of the combat has to be handled by the real players. There are no real roles to play, but coordinating points of attack is vital. Also vital is the ability to revive a comrade who is taken down.

At one point in a huge battle to the coast to take out Japanese artillery that was battering navy, the team was down to one player. Three needed to be revived. Resuscitating is on a timer. Run out of time and the mission fails. It was frantic trying to get to all the players to get them back up, but it was accomplished.

WWII looks better every time, at least graphically.

Call of Duty: World at War Movie [October 09, 2008, 10:17 am ET] - Post a Comment

A new Call of Duty: World at War "fire & destruction" trailer shows off some of the, well, fire & destruction in the next installment in the military shooter series, currently nearing completion at Treyarch. The clip is posted on FileFront and Gamer's Hell.

There was a promising-looking WWI title some years back, but it got away before I could budget for it. Might still be a few jewelcase copies floating around somewheres... not a AAA title by its look, but there are almost no WWI-era titles in the genre at all. I'll keep an eye out for any info.

WWII has been played to death. CoD4s AC130 mission is top notch. However, the game is a bit short.

BZZZZT. Wrong answer! While Treyarch is developing WaW, they are using IW's engine from CoD4... so WaW will feel a ot more like 4 than 3.

Re: Call of Duty 4: anyone play it yet?

Would anyone be interested in pooling funds to get a [MA] CoD4 server?  10 players for a private server is $14.95/mo with Clanservers.

Not really a plug, but I help admin a server from these guys and it's less than $1/slot. cool

As for WaW, reading early Beta player reviews, it sounds to be nothing more advanced than a skin on top of the CoD4 engine. Yeah, the weapons are WWII and the whole "dog attack" thing sounds neat, but is that worth another $40-50? Nah. down

Russian dogs carry AT mines? Interesting times when it was found they weren't too discriminating about whose tanks they ran under... wink
