Re: Registered Voters
The Montana Republican party says they are withdrawing their challenge to almost 6,000 voter registrations.
As we first reported last week, Republicans notified several counties that they were challenging voter registrations whose addresses didn't match the U.S. Postal Service database.
Republican Party Executive Director Jacob Eaton said they were trying to guard against voter fraud. Challenged voters could have been forced to re-register or submit an affidavit proving their current address.
The maneuver drew criticism from state and county election officials who had to investigate the claims.
Nonpartisan voter rights groups said there was no proof of fraud in the state and said it was partisan-driven.

As for traffic offenses, as long as your court date is still pending, you have nothing to fear. If you blew your court date, and have a bench warrant against you, then see my previous point.
Yes, it stinks; but so do a lot of tactics cops use to serve warrants. My personal favorite is the tactic of saying the people in question won a prize, and arresting them when they come to claim it.You missed the point: there will be NO police officers stationed at the polls (or at least no undercover police looking to arrest people). This is just one tactic used to confuse, dissuade and/or intimidate potential voters. Another such tactic used before was to have professionally-made flyers with official-looking state seals and such on them sent out "announcing" that the elections were being moved to the next day or the following Tuesday--these were arranged to arrive in mailboxes the day before the election.
One last note on this subject, then I wanna get back on the main topic. There are also people not registered to vote because thay owe back child support, back taxes and have outstanding warrents and don't want the state to know their current address. Not because thay feel they will be arrested at the polling place.

Umm, no. You just state your name and they check the list. I've never had to show ID at the polls.
I don't even do that, walk in and they say Hi Kev.

State name, address. Check list. Cross name off. Vote. [NO ID]. That was MA. I suspect NC will be a tad more of a gauntlet.

I live in a village in wood co Ohio and last election we were required to show state ID... Which was all kind of funny because one of the ladies was my second grade teacher (who still remembers me), and they made one of the guys running for village mayor get his ID out ..."Yes Harold even you have to show your ID" doh

Re: Registered Voters
In California (where I have always voted) I never had to show ID. I do get out my voter card for the convenience of the folks manning the polling station, but that card can be easily replicated--one could use a typewriter.
And, no: my district is not small enough that someone at the station would recognize me.

When I was still living in Anne Arundel county in MD, I had to show ID. I can't remember if I was asked for ID in AR.

We are required to bring our voter registration card. They check you against the rolls from that.

Re: Registered Voters
i'm definitely voting.
i don't know how well you all do with local elections, but i'm bad about informing myself on the candidates. to an extent, i think local elections are even more important than the national ones.
there's just not a lot of data to find out about the local candidates, i don't believe.

Re: Registered Voters
At this point I've only really informed myself about the presidential election of this year, but I've been told there will be other items on the ballot. I don't really know anything at all about the non-presidential elections of this year. I'd like to get informed about that, but I don't even know where to start. I don't know who the candidates are or anything about them, and nor do I know any of the issues. When I say I know nothing about the non-presidential elections of 2008 or anything else non-presidential that may be on the ballot, I mean it.
I'm in Texas/Harris county/Houston. I know of some sources for local news (Houston Chronicle, ABC 13, and KHOU), but I don't think current events are what I need.
I'd appreciate if someone would point me in the right direction.

A good place to start would be the candidate's own websites.

BATTLEGROUNDS
A Wis. Call for GOP Poll Watchers Draws National Notice
By Mary Pat Flaherty
The Wisconsin Republican Party has issued a call for volunteer poll watchers for Election Day, and the criteria is a little specific, seeking especially folks made of sterner stuff.
Jonathan Waclawski, the party's election day operations, wrote in a Sept. 8 e-mail that he needed contact information for people "who would potentially be willing to volunteer ... at inner city (more intimidating) polling places. Particularly, I am interested in names of Milwaukee area veterans, policemen, security personnel, firefighters etc. ... If you have any connections with such organizations, please pass that information on."
The e-mail fell into the hands of an Obama supporter, who passed it to the Obama campaign, who released it today after a news conference with its campaign director and general counsel, who discussed voter registration, voter education and voter protection.
The Obama team pointed to Waclawski's e-mail as ground-level tactics that could create concerns among voters.
"This is much ado about nothing. I don't see anything wrong with this," said Kirsten Kukowski, a spokeswoman with the Wisconsin GOP. "Intimidating was referring to the polling places, not to poll watchers who would be intimidating," she said. "The way I read this we are looking for people to go to intimidating places.
A goon is a goon.
