waiters/waitresses - question about tipping
I always leave the standard tip on the credit card transaction slip (15% to 20) and if the service is stellar, leave additional cash behind the slip so they don't have to report it if they don't want to (a lot of wait people are on really tight budgets raising kids, I don't fault them for not fully reporting cash tips)
But it just dawned on me - is that practice common enough that wait stuff know to look at the signed receipt to make sure they get their full tip if there is cash behind the receipt as well?

Every waiter and waitress I know looks at the tip line, bar none.

Um check your billing statement ... if the amount on your statement is the same as the total you left on the card ... then the server got the tip

Re: waiters/waitresses - question about tipping
I like to leave cash for the server whenever possible, even when I pay by card.

Re: waiters/waitresses - question about tipping
Res as one of the people who waits on tables I can easily say yes we know. In fact just about every restaurant POS system requires that the tip be entered on the card slip before you can close out the check. This is required even if the tip is all cash. In addition the system will not let you start a new check on the table in question until the previous check is completely closed out.
Also I hope this does not turn into another multi-page thread on tipping

Re: waiters/waitresses - question about tipping
I've heard that waitstaff prefer cash tips to ones on the credit card, so I always tip cash if possible.
All I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me.

Re: waiters/waitresses - question about tipping
who decided what % to tip in the first place?
if the service is good.. tip
if the service is not good... don't.
and tip according to how you liked/disliked the total experience in the establishment.

Re: waiters/waitresses - question about tipping
He isn't asking whether or not to tip. He's asking if he leaves a tip on the table (a bonus tip) will the server know he also tipped on the receipt. Looks like they do know.

No.
If service is not good, tip smaller...and explain why.
Also remember that the "total experience in the establishment" is not completely the fault of the server and not under their control. Don't punish them for something not their fault.

true
I do make sure management knows when something is wrong.
and if the waitstaff has kept the chin up and smiled and done their part in trying to make my time there enjoyable while the cook or whatever screwed the pooch, then i do see that they are slipped a bit of cash then ask them to tell the manager to pass my way and splain what's not right.
it's the establishments that split the tips across the board ( waitstaff/cooks/host(ess)) that I care not for

To answer the origional ?...
Yes... your server will know. We always look @ the tip line. And besides, when we do our end of night paperwork, we'll see it when we reconcile our bank.

Re: waiters/waitresses - question about tipping
My wife and I were at a restaurant about a year ago and the waitress was taking care of a few tables inside near the bar (we always sit there as families with children avoid that area) and a few tables out on the patio. She took our order in good time and then basically disappeared. A "runner" brought our apps and dinners to us and I fetched our drinks direct from the bar. SHE apparently had a bunch of friends on the patio and chose instead to hang out with them.
When we saw her again she was there to collect the signed bill, as someone else actually rang us up. I asked her point blank "why are you a waitress?". Do you need t he money? Are your friends going to pay your rent when you are out of a job? She got pissed and before she could rant the manager was standing behind her and heard the whole thing. On our way out I spoke to him. I explained that I had worked in restaurants for quite some time and I understood and that it really wouldn't affect our choice to go there again.
I did leave her a dollar out of the pity of my heart. What can I say? I just believe that bad performance doesn't deserve a reward. The next time we went in about a week later she was gone. Oh well.
And just so I'm not accused of derailment- she did look at the tip line. They all do. Why wouldn't you?

So, if the customer leaves a cash tip, and scratches out the tip line...

Then when the server closes out the check they enter zero as the tip left on the card.
I'm sure there are some people without any conscious that would try and scam some extra cash out of you so as someone said earlier check your statements
