New Imac
My PPC Imac is about ready to die. I was holding out for a matte screen, but have given up on that. I just dont want to buy a new 24" 500 Gb Imac just to find out the next day they have released an all new new upgraded version. I did this once before. What do you guys think????? When will the next new model arrive??
thanks
Rob

Re: New Imac
Probably not until January. If you need a new computer, you need a new computer. And you can't always guess when apple is going to release somthing new just as anyother computer manufacturer. Id just go for it dude. If it comes out within 14 days, you can always return it for the new one.

Re: New Imac
If there's no new iMac by Nov 15, then there will not be a new iMac until January.

Re: New Imac
rules for computer buying...
if you NEED it. buy it.
if you WANT it, buy it.
or you can sit and wait forever as there is always a newer/better/supremoOMGmodel just around the corner that will be released on some future unknown date randomly picked by the manufacturer that will just happen to be 35 days post your purchase.

Re: New Imac
A friend of mine ordered an Indigo iMac, then canceled the order because she read a rumor about a flat-screen 17" iMac coming out. Of course, it was YEARS before that actually happened.
She ended up getting an original iMac for a bargain price (I don't think she was ever happy with it's speed, though).
Aw, he's no fun, he fell right over.

How long has it been?
I'd wait.

Re: New Imac
Personally I'm holding out for a matte screen too. No clue when anything new will come out... maybe something new in time for Christmas? I dunno...

Re: New Imac
UPDATED 4:20pm: Apple has denied that new systems are on the way. See new story, "Apple debunks Mac Mini, iMac rumor"
Apple may clear up the confusion regarding the future of the Mac Mini a week from Tuesday.
That's what MacNN thinks, reporting Monday that Apple will have refreshed versions of the Mac Mini and iMac desktops to announce next Tuesday, Apple's traditional day of the week for product launches. Both systems could be in line for refreshes with new Intel hardware, but it doesn't sound like any drastic changes will be made to either system.
Mac Mini, iMac updates coming next week?
Apple has quashed the rumor mill's latest obsession, declaring that no new Macs will be released before the holidays.
Earlier Monday, reports surfaced that Apple was getting ready to release an updated version of the iMac and the Mac Mini next week. But a company representative told Macworld, "our holiday lineup is set," in a rare move to dampen the speculation regarding the new products.
As Macworld's Jim Dalrymple points out, the iMac and Mac Mini seem overdue for a hardware update, making it quite plausible that new versions would be along some time soon. But Apple appears to be saving those updates for a later date, perhaps at the annual Macworld conference in January.
Apple did just release new MacBooks and MacBook Pros to bolster the Mac lineup heading into the holiday season, which is generally the busiest time of the year for the computer industry.

Re: New Imac
what a bummer. I almost had myself talked into a new iMac for Christmas. I still might. . .but the lack of an update in addition to the possible release of Snow Leopard 10.6 in January makes me think it is wise to wait. I don't want to pay for yet another $129 OS X upgrade.
I was also thinking about an Apple TV. . .but when Jobs called it still a 'hobby' it kind of turned me off also. I'm not paying that much for a toy Apple isn't committed to. Don't want to end up with an iBrick.
Hopefully Scrooge McJobs will announce something good at Macworld...then maybe I can buy myself something new and shiny for my Birthday in Feb. :-)

Re: New Imac
There's only a slim chance that 10.6 will be released in January. I wouldn't be surprised to see 10.6 not released until next autumn.

I just did some research myself and I have to agree, a January Snow Leopard release is pretty unlikely. Of course, reading about Snow Leopard only brought up more questions for me. It *seems* the major feature for Snow Leopard will be better support for multi-core processors. (i.e. it will be easier for developers to take advantage of them)
So, would the multi-core chips that are in the current iMac be able to take advantage of the 64-bit Snow Leopard? I understand they were a 'special run' of the “Santa Rosa” chips, and not the same as the newer “Montevina” chips used in the the just-released Macbooks. (and in upcoming Mac Pro's?)
I'd really like a mac pro, but the cost is just too prohibitive. I hate the iMac all-in-one merry go 'round I've been on for 10 years. . .buying keyboards, mice, and monitors over and over again. . .but the up-front premium for Mac Pro is just too steep for me. I just bought my Mom a Dell for $200, spending an order of magnitude more for a Mac Pro just seems to excessive.
Macs are easy to use, but they're certainly hard to buy!

OpenCL should bring much better GP-GPU app support and general video acceleration, using available graphics processing more thoroughly and in new ways.

Why not? Nearly all CPUs these days are 64-bit. IIRC core logic support is adequate.
