Trying to get an idea of what a web site design costs???

So, I know I'm asking a big question, but I just wanted to get an idea of what would cost to have a pro design my web site.  I would have nothing fancy, no flash or anything like that--not a big fan of it.  Mostly words and photographs and a few sound files of me reading some of my stories--perhaps even have them available for people to download.  Anyway, that's about it.  Like I said, something simple but well done.  I simply have no idea what a designer charges so I want to get an idea.  Thanks.

iWeb and Photoshop can make a pretty solid site...

Understood.  But what if you want to have a professional do it?  A person with a strong sense of design.

Something that simple shouldn't be more than $60-100 depending on the number of pages.  Of course, probably lots of "pros" would charge more.  Lots of CS students might do it for free for extra credit in web design class.

The going cost of a web site, from a commercial, professional is between $500 to $1500, depending upon the company you contract with.

Thanks all.  Now, when a website needs updating, do they do all of that?  What exactly does their services include?  Besides the code, do they also write the content?  What else?  Besides the fee for creating the site, do you also pay a monthly fee for the general maintenance of the site?  Like I said, I just want to have a general idea of the services of a web designer.  Thank you.
