Re: Apple Detractors Have Killed This Forum
I suggest modifying the forum code so that once every 24 hours it randomly picks two user IDs. One it permabans, and the other it makes an admin. Now, that would be a great idea, don't you think?

As long as it picks your username for permabanning first I'm okay with the plan.

Yeah, cause Random User would always be one who was picked.

Re: Apple Detractors Have Killed This Forum
I have never understood the people who assert that the mods here are "ban crazy".
I would submit that the fact that I have only been banned once in my 8 years here is pretty concrete evidence that a great deal of restraint is generally used regarding bans.
My observation has been that you really have to work on it to get banned here.

Well, not all of them were working on getting banned. I'd rather separate people who obviously enjoy trolling from people whose ideas are radical or insulting.

Re: Apple Detractors Have Killed This Forum
IIRC, everyone that's received a temp ban has worked their way up to it, with maybe one or 2 exceptions, and with thos it was more of a cooling off period for them, and those have been generally good posters that just reacted badly to trolls.
The perma bans were for more serious infractions and the punishment swift. I think only 1 perma ban has been reversed.
It's actually funny that were being accused of overmoderation and being ban happy. I see more complaints about us not taking action against posters that behave like jerks.

Having been away, I can't tell the overmod is still happening but from my observation, it was happening, pre-MacLife iirc.

Actually no, not in that specific case but I have pushed the bounds so often that I just had a "Hadda happen sometime" attitude about it.

Hmmm, do you also put on lipstick sometimes? Ala a Palin pitbull?
I don't know if I've come close. Maybe I have. There are times when all you want to do past a certain point is to escalate massively, and with lethal force. Leaving you standing alone with the terrain about you, smoking.

Unfortunately, no matter how hard I try, none of you drop dead after reading my posts.

Re: Apple Detractors Have Killed This Forum
I've joined a few other forums in the meantime, but what has sucked the joy out of this place for me was the switch fom MAF to M|LF, and the continuing neglect of the UI. The forum was made 'just functional enough', and left at that. Any attempts by M|LF staff and M|LF forum members to try and fix what appear to be some serious but very easily resolved issues has been spurned by Imagine. Treatment like that is bound to sour anybody's outlook.

Re: Apple Detractors Have Killed This Forum
The problem IMHO is general frustration and fragmentation of the masses over political and economic issues.
For example, people either loved or hated Bush, and whichever it was, they were passionate to the extreme about it. This kind of division often resulted in a constant sense of frustration and those in the opposite position that extended far beyond just political discussion.
You see it everywhere - movies are darker now than they were just a decade ago, music is darker than it was just a decade ago, etc.
Society needs a kick in the ass.
I also blame text messaging. It's completely ruining society.
