Beige G3s run OS X just fine - if it's 10.0, 10.1 or 10.2. It won't boot Windows XP or run Windows programs though.

Re: help with older mac g3
it looks like the original g3 laptop couldn't run 10 ... mac tracker shows 9 as the max.

Good point - I just assumed they mean a Beige G3 too.

I assume it is a beige too ... but I decided to look up every g3 I could think of.

Download MacTracker (donationware, versions for both Macs and Windows) or look through Apple History to help identify your Mac. Unfortunately what you may be able to do to your Mac depends on which model it is, so we won't be able to help without some more info on your Mac.

The B&W was a G3, too and it can run OS X just fine. Well, fine for a 10 year old computer, which means pokey as smurf if you want to do anything useful, but it would handle playing music with iTunes with no problem.

You may have to partition the drive so that OS X is installed on a 8Gb or smaller partition in order to get it to boot, I had a Beige G3 tower that had a Rev.A ROM in it necessitating the 8Gb partition trick. It ran 10.2.8 for years, I donated it just a few weeks ago Marathon sticker set and all to a good cause.

GF is using my BW G3 running Panther for online school work. She bitches a little about the speed but is thankful to have any sort of OSX computer. Her 7600 OS9 model wouldn't cut it.
I told her she was welcome to use the G5 in my office if she really needed some speed (I'm going to turn that one into an internet TV server though).
