PB G4 12'' Will Not Run Off Of Battery

So, another ebay purchase of mine has a little problem that I can't quite track down.  It's a 12'' Powerbook (867mhz and now 1.12gb of RAM).  The issue is that the laptop will not run off of the battery.  It could be multiple things, as the battery is only holding something like a 500 mah charge.  However, the battery is seen by system profiler and it does charge, but as soon as the power adapter is unplugged, the system shuts off immediately.

I'm thinking that the DC-in board is fine, as the battery is noticed by the computer and it will run without a battery installed.  Could it be the PRAM battery?  The clock will reset to default (March something 1969 I think) from time to time, but I can't pinpoint exactly what makes it do so.

So far, I've reset open firmware and the PMU.  The PRAM battery would be an easy solution, but I'm thinking it's probably the logic board.

Oh, and the fan runs constantly.....

Ideas?

Re: PB G4 12'' Will Not Run Off Of Battery

Well, after some research I found out that the 12'' PB does not have a PRAM battery.  I found some articles saying it doesn't have an internal "backup" battery like the 15'' and 17''.  I would assume this "backup" is the PRAM battery.

However, I also found out that the symptoms I've got may indicate a dead battery, and the low mah rating that system profiler gave me would point to that too.  I'm going to try and rebuild the battery I have with a good iBook battery (They use the same LiIon packs inside.  I just popped them both open to look) and see if that does anything for me.

When you're done healing from the chemical burns, you can buy one of these.

Re: PB G4 12'' Will Not Run Off Of Battery

I bought a battery a few months ago from a knock-off company (can't remember the name at the moment just google) for my MacBook Pro which claimed to pack more juice than Apple's original and this was backed up by real life testing. Well, when I got it and ran Battery Health Monitor, it stated that the charge was at 115%, 15% over the original's capacity. A few months later of being unplugged at least 50% of the time and Battery Health Monitor says its current charge to be at 105%. Not bad at all.

Not only was this battery cheaper than Apple's but identical to theirs. Perfect fit, and my MBP feels liberated again, like a new machine.

A NewerTech battery, perchance?  I've got one of those in my PBG4.
