Bummed out today

I just got the notice from my boss that they were ending my contract 4.5 months early.

I knew it was comming. Now I get to have two phone conferences, one with a guy in India, and the other with the writer in China who will be taking over the products.

sad

Back onto the job market, what little is left of it.

What industry do you work in, if you don't mind my asking?

Re: Bummed out today

mrreet, the conference calls are to transfer knowledge. Basically I'll briefly train the other person on where the information is and how to do my job.

mo'ron, I've worked in many different industries, from aerospace to medical manufacturing, from financial to HVAC, mostly in software, some hardware documentation. I write.

Re: Bummed out today

I've been contracting since 9/11. Mostly because I haven't found a company to hire on as permanent party. At HP my boss got hired on as permanent party, and she was let go 2 weeks ago. Contracting can be ok. Sometimes the pay is very nice, sometimes ok, sometimes real crappy, but the best part is I don't have to care about company politics.

I'm a mercenary, I just walk in and ask "who do you want me to kill today?"

Re: Bummed out today

Good luck, of course. I suspect a number of us need larger-than-usual doses of it now.

HP workers get a shaft for Christmas
Memowatch          No raises for workers, management not mentioned

..

-Limit hiring to revenue-generating positions only

-Reduce agency contractor spend

..

Thank you,

Ann

Google was also able to tell investors they weren't laying folks off, as the layoffs were contractors. They had thousands.

Re: Bummed out today

being a bit merc myself, I would have a problem training my replacement unless...
a) i was leaving on good terms and my decision.
b) they paid me well for it.
