Network setup troubles

I am having some trouble setting up a network in my new house. The house is pre-wired for ethernet. We have a switch set up going from our cable modem to the different rooms in the house (each of which needs a seperate ethernet cable from the switch). When all is wired, things seem to work fine. However, when I try to add in my airport extreme, things go haywire.

I have the airport plugged in in one of the walls, so that the connection goes modem > switch > pre-wired > airport. However, when I do this, the internet gets dropped, both wireless and the other wired computers. Do I need to have the airport wired directly into the switch, as if it was it's own separate room, or do I need to have the connection be modem > airport > switch > pre-wired? Or is this even possible to do?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Network setup troubles

The wiring as you have it now should be fine, provided the wiring in your walls is good. (It probably is, but it's always a possibility.)

You do have the Airport set to bridge mode so it doesn't distribute IPs, right? I'd imagine either your modem or your "switch" is already taking care of that.

Re: Network setup troubles

Try it this way

modem
    |
airport
    |
switch
| | | |
each computer

later down the line if you want to add another network you just have to add 2 more switches...

modem
     |
switch
  |                                                  |
AP1(192.168.0.1)                AP2(192.168.1.1)
  |                                                  |
switch                                         switch
| | | |                                          | | | |
each computer                           each computer

Seconded

Why in the hell would he want that ... he wants to use the airport on the existing network.
