MacBook speed?
I'm about to buy a MacBook after 10 years on a beige G3 desktop, so this will be a big change in a lot of ways! The model I have my eye on is the 2.4GHz, 2GB memory, 160GB hard drive. Then I saw a refurbished MacBook from Apple that was 2.2GHz, 1GB memory, 120GB hard drive, and of course a bit cheaper, so I'm considering that too. My question is about the speed; obviously either model will be immensely faster than my current 233MHz G3, but if I get the 2.2GHz MacBook, will I be wishing I sprung for the faster model a few years from now? Someone once told me you should buy the fastest processor you can afford, you can always expand your memory later. Does that rule of thumb still apply to MacBooks? And if so, will this extra 0.2GHz make a big difference over time?
Thanks all,
Dante

Re: MacBook speed?
The refurb one probably have more "bang for the bucks" And 0.2Ghz isn't something you will notice anyway.
Congratulations with the new mac, you hald out a long time with your G3

Re: MacBook speed?
It's always been my opinion that you'd only see the benefit of the bottom- versus the top-of-the-line processor jump if you're upgrading your computer every year or so. Otherwise, in a couple yearsthey're both going to be equally as out of date. If you're planning on hanging onto this one for another 10 years, well, 200MHz ain't going to mean smurf.
Buy the low end refurb.

Re: MacBook speed?
Hey, thanks for the advice. And if it was my decision alone, I'd have already gotten the 2.2GHz refurb. But I neglected to mention I'm getting this with my wife, and I had trouble convincing her that A) the refurbs from Apple are like a new machine, only one that had a previous owner, and B) that 200MHz won't make a difference in the long run. We did get an iPod Nano that was an Apple refurb, but I think she is a little more skittish on a bigger purchase.
Now, OK, we're talking a differnce of $215 between the 2.2GHz refurb and the 2.4GHz new. (or $107 between new and refurbed 2.4GHz) And I'd like to save that money for software or peripherals like a new printer. Any other arguments I can use? She is not as comfortable with computers as I am, so any help on approaching the topic "non-threatening" is appreciated. (It just occured to me that I may be sounding to her like I'm making things up just to get what I want!)
We're using her student status to get a discount, so in the end, I'm not going to get something she isn't comfortable with (even if it could save over $200....marriage is worth more!) But I'll try one more time to convince her, if anyone has some ideas. (Of course, if we do get the new 2.4GHz, then she can't second guess my decision on the purchase if anything goes wrong....)
Anyone else get into spousal/partner issues like this?
Thanks,
Dante

Re: MacBook speed?
I just got that exact refurb last week. It's working great and looks as new as a non-refurb macbook. My mac mini croaked on me (logic board died), and I realized I needed a macbook since I was always borrowing my wife's.
Get the refurb.

Re: MacBook speed?
I bought the 2.2 refurb last month and it's working great. as an added bonus refubs often come with more then they should. for example when I bought mine it was supposed to come with 1GB ram and instead it came with 2GB. of course YMMV but with a new one there isn't even the chance of free stuff.
oh and my wife is happy with the computer as well.

Re: MacBook speed?
I always buy refurbs. Exact same warranty as brand new so there is nothing to fear. I've never noticed a single mark from a previous owner or anything that would make me believe it wasn't brand-spanking new. And as Donkey Butter mentioned, the surprise upgrades can also be a big bonus.
I got a pBook with like $700ish dollars of Apple HD and RAM upgrades that I didn't pay a dime for.
But can you get refurbs with a student discount?

Yeah. My wife is always getting pissed of at me when I upgrade. She's like "Is that a new computer?" And I'm like "Yeah. I got it last week." So she sez "Can I have your old one?" And I sez "I already gave it to my mistress." And then she flips out for no reason. Look woman, I make the money and I write whatever checks I feel like. Don't try to change me, baby.

Re: MacBook speed?
How can I not get the refurb? I hope I get some extra RAM like some of your experiences. That would really seal it. But I think I will get the 2.4 GHz refurb. I think it will be an easier sell to my wife. I don't think I can explain that the 200MHz won't make a difference. Her experience is from seeing our computer slowly get left in the dust as web pages got more busier, so from her point of view, how can we not get the fastest we can? As for the refurb, I find it kind of funny she is not all over that since we live for garage sales and insane deals at thrift stores. (I have maybe a half dozen name brand dress shirts for work that cost us $1 each!) But that is an objective point to make--the refurbs pass the same QC that Apple puts its brand new models through and are covered by exactly the same warranty. No brainer to me.
As for the discount someone asked, the refurbs aren't discounted but the Apple Care plan is. $183 instead of $250...not bad. Unfortunately, our local Apple store is in a 7.75% sales tax city, so that hurts. (our local Best Buy however is in a 6.25% tax rate, so I may go there for other hardware)
I'll let you all know how it goes.
Thanks,
Dante

Re: MacBook speed?
You know... Amazon has some awesome deals and Rebates on NEW computers as well as recently outdated (maybe?) ANYWAY there is NO sales tax .. well. depending on which state you live in.
Moral of the story. With rebates, no sales tax, and possible freebies, give amazon, maczone, macmall... etc a shot. they could be cheaper. and wait till WWDC too. if they announce anything there, the online stores (that i previously mentioned) will drop prices further.

Re: MacBook speed?
Ah, more sage advice. But we don't really have time to wait, and I really need to buy the Apple protection plan. To my knowledge, you can't get that anywhere but through Apple. I don't have enough faith in my abilities to not have that support; and unlike my last job, I don't happen to have a coworker who was a total Mac guru. [Gave me an old 10G hard drive for my G3 when it died and showed me how to install it! I will miss that--I really loved how you can go in the G3 and mess around; I wish I learned that sooner!]
Thanks, I'll keep on eye out in those sources for peripherals and hardware.

Re: MacBook speed?
For any who are interested...thanks for all your advice. We got the 2.4GHz refurb with no problems and to go from the G3 to this was like becoming the Jetsons. We're wireless, got 3 different iPods now and my wife's become a computer nerd like me! Possibly the best thing to happen to us is that now we can view video online, our two children have just seen the Michigan J. Frog LooneyTunes cartoon for the first time. The portability is amazing--I"m sitting next to our Christmas tree clear across the house from our old computer. The G3 is still used for some apps, and I may never get rid of that old machine!
Merry Christmas!
