I agree. The current divisions are actually silly in some respects. For example:

Everyday Tech
On-The-Go
So, if my post is about a MacBook Pro does it always go in On-The-Go or do I post it in Tech News if it has some news in it or do I post it in Everday Tech if I have a question about it? I mean seriously, WTF is the point of those divisions?
Maybe Everyday Tech and On the Go could be rolled together; I don't own a laptop so I recuse myself... but in general, you do what we all do everyday: make a judgement call. In Tech News is mainly that, news; it's not tech help. So... is the topic more about news, general tech help, or something specific to mobility/lappies? There are corner cases, but in general, you judge the most salient aspect of your post and choose appropriately. If you're way off for some reason, a mod or admin will get 'round to moving it. 'K?

I open a tab on 'Show new posts since last visit,' it shows them including what Forum they're in- even MT. :shudder: Problem solved?

The "show new posts since last visit" is more of a band-aid than a solution. I shouldn't have to scroll through a list of all the new threads to find the few I might be interested in. The whole point of this forum was to give feedback on what the users thought of the forums and how they were run, set up, etc. It seems that when we do, the mods/admins just tell us we are stupid and things don't change. The forum is dying. That is a fact. We are offering suggestions on how to revive it or at least stem the tide, and once again, are being ignored.
Having several possibly overlapping forums that are getting little traffic makes no sense. It just clutters up the forum list and makes it harder to see what you want to see. Several of us in this thread have offered solid arguments as to why the board could be better with fewer subdivisions. I have yet to see a mod/admin give a solid, reasonable argument for the long list we currently have. Its just "well use the Show new posts since last visit" or "well, just ignore what you don't want to see". How many more regular posters must you lose before you get the point? The people using the forums should have some say in how its laid out, seeing as they are the ones that are using them, dontcha think?

Thank you.
That's nice to know, even though it doesn't feel like it some times.
And I guess I shouldn't be bitching so much at the mods/admins as much as the "Powers that Be". From what I gather, they are the final say on things...?

Good point. I think more than anything this has led to the traffic slowing in these forums. I don't think people feel that they can come here for help and receive an answer in a timely manner. We have a bunch of people that are knowledgeable enough to help them but if we don't see their posts they don't get an answer. Even worse is when their posts get catapulted from one forum to another because they aren't sure where to post. And what about them getting yelled at for posting in multiple forums because they want maximum exposure. Well, if we didn't have so many darn forums then we wouldn't have that problem

In Tech News of it's Mac Pro News
On the Go it's General discussion or Help
I could be wrong about this because right now the primary focus of the discussion is how to best handle the Clan forums, however I would say handle home airport issues like a regular tech issue for the time being and post in On the Go or Everyday Tech depending on what sort of system you use.

In practice though aren't a good bit of the problems that you would run into and need help with the same regardless of the type of Mac you use? So you have to hope that the good samaritans frequent all forums in order to get an answer.
I use a MacBook Pro but I could help with most problems regardless of which type of Mac the questioner was using. So if I want to be helpful I need to go out of my way to check a bunch of different forums just to see if anyone needs help. Condensing the forums would give the person needing help access to more traffic that might be able to help them.

Like I said the first focus is find the best solution in Clan Mac|Life section (something really has needed to be done down there for a while). After we iron out the details (it hopefully shouldn't take much longer) for that we be working on the details of part or all of Digital|Life as it obviously needs work too.
mrreet2001 like I said home networking in Everyday Tech or On the Go. That means Pro & semi-pro networking stuff in Networking & Servers.

Don't I know it, dv, but I'd imagine it could get much harder when you have to deal with more than a handful (or two) of devices, an intranet, and/or some combination there of on top of the standard issues.

Were hoping to keep ST warping to a minimum until we go the best possible solution. However, if we scream reactor breach you might want to duck and cover.

Re: Can we please merge some forums?
Bat, it's true that I've never been a [MA] clan member, and although I've made four posts in Gaming that's obviously not very active. So, yes, discussion of the clan forums is academic to me. I am a minimalist, and what I see is a very large category that gets very low traffic. Part of me also thinks it would be "neat and tidy" to have the gaming forum and the Clan forum(s) next to each other.
It's true that with them at the bottom they aren't that difficult to ignore, but they still add clutter. If the admins would rather make all the [MA] forums other than [MA] General invisible (to non-clan members) rather than merging all [MA] into one forum, that would be fine by me.

Re: Can we please merge some forums?
I've made some recommendations that would among other things, archive the defunct Squads and Xan's and merge the individual games forums relatively painlessly (so long as you only look at the topic titles from Jan 2008 on). The net results leave one forum in the section open to the general public but there would be 6 forums there which would be invisible to all but those with clan, moderator, or admin access.
BTW my reasons for recommending merging the individual games forums is that 1) there were all of 71 topics with posts dating from 2008-2009 posts between them and 2) there will always be some new game which people think should be added or some old game that shouldn't be dropped.
If we left them in separate forums, things would only get worse. Still some input from members of the clan besides Bat wouldn't hurt.
