The only other gotcha I can imagine is FireWire but since this is a desktop unit and doesn't run on batteries i say the odds of that gotcha are lower (50%).
I still find "battery life" to be an absurd reason that apple dropped FW on the macbook. You have an official apple release stating that "power requirements" were the reason they dropped FW on the MB?

No but running on batteries generally is synonymous with portability and FireWire with is relatively rare in most portable peripherals these days (though it is admittedly still pretty common on many fixed peripherals & standalone devices).

Quad-core is inevitable for iMacs. But will it happen this winter, or next ? I'll split the difference and say it will appear in the 24" iMacs first.
Quad-cores will also have a major advantage in differentiating the laptops and desktops (as if screensize wasn't enough).

re the non-removable battery - I've had a couple of occasions to yank a battery out of a laptop.
Once was when the thing seized up and the only way to reset it was to remove all power sources. The second was quite recently when I spilt a glass of water over my MacBook Pro. Immediate removal of power and battery is (I understand) rather important when that happens.
Neither of these scenarios would allow this now.
Well, I've never not had success getting either my PowerBook or MBP to shut down holding the power button for 5 or ten seconds.
In scenario number 2: I would expect my laptop, desktop, most things electronic to fail if water were to pour over them. So I'm just that much more careful.

Not even a hint of hardware updates for these:
iMac
Mac Pro
Mac Mini
Xserve
iPhone
Cinema Displays
Mighty Mouse
Apple Keyboard
Not even a hint of the new flagship Snow Leopard. Is Apple insane ?

Steve is holding out on consumers.
"Apple is a $30 billion company, yet we've got less than 30 major products," Jobs said to Fortune . "I don't know if that's ever been done before. Certainly, the great consumer electronics companies of the past had thousands of products. We tend to focus much more. People think focus means saying yes to the thing you've got to focus on. But that's not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully."
What the hell are these other ideas ?

We got the mini today, but when I was in the middle of copy over all the data from the old machine to the mini, my mom walked up and forced a shutdown on the old computer. Not because there was any problem, mind you. Ugh! Hopefully she didn't cause any data corruption.

She wanted to check the progress, but the monitor was off. She thought the computer was asleep, so she pressed the power button to try to wake it up (the only way that machine will wake anymore). I'm hoping she didn't cause any data or drive corruption in either system.

Wow. You need to train your parents better. Mine know not to touch anything if I'm working on their system. It's like reverting back to toddler age when you get your hand slapped for touching things.

I give everyone a warning of what I'm doing and that the consequences include things screwing up and finger getting broke if they mess with it before I say so when I set thing up. If they get upset, oh well. Better they're upset for a little bit than everyone's ending up pissed for a while.

$179 to replace the battery.
Replacement Battery Pricing for 17" MacBook Pro Leaked
Replacing your battery on your MacBook Pro has become an expensive proposition, but long life may negate complaints
..
Now more details have come out of Apple, thanks to a discussion between Apple representatives and Gizmodo. The company has confirmed a replacement price of $179 to remove the new battery and have it replaced.
Fortunately, Apple estimates that a battery has 1,000 charge cycles in it. This means that at a mid-use scenario of 200 charges per year, the battery would last 5 years. However, for heavy users this scenario becomes slightly less optimistic, as daily charges would necessitate a replacement in 3 years or less.
The new battery represents perhaps Apple's priciest replacement to date. Even the MacBook Air's battery only costs $129 to replace. However, the battery used in the new 17" MacBook Pro is a more advanced design, which Apple states is the reason for the added cost.

Re: Official MWSF '09 Topic
My bet is that 3rd party companies will come up with a battery and kit (if needed) that will allow you to replace it for less than half that price. I haven't seen a teardown of the thing, but I think it's doable without a whole lot of expertise.

Re: Official MWSF '09 Topic
DailyTech previously reported that Apple was leaving Macworld, and would not be attending the trade show in 2010. The announcement sounded rather strange, as Macworld is built entirely around Apple and has always been Apple's podium for big announcements.
Now there are reports that sources at Apple have leaked the real reason for Apple's departure from Macworld -- Apple will be headed to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in 2010. AppleInsider says its sources report the move to be a done deal. The shift seems logical, as it would represent Apple moving to a larger stage, but it is still somewhat surprising as CES has always been dominated by Apple-rival Microsoft, with Bill Gates and now by CEO Steve Ballmer delivering opening keynotes.

i would be pretty shocked if that were true. i believe Apple is being genuine when they say they don't need trade shows anymore. plus, Apple is all about control, and they'd have even less of it at CES than they do at Macworld.

Re: Official MWSF '09 Topic
We'll just have to see what Apple's response is to this. It doesn't bode well for MacWorld.
In mid-December, DailyTech reported that Macworld 2009 would mark Apple's last appearance at the show. Macworld has been the traditional breeding ground for new Apple product announcement with the iPhone and MacBook Air being two of the most recent reveals.
A month later, news began to circulate that Apple's absence from Macworld meant an open invitation from CEA which orchestrates the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. CES is usually home to big names in the tech industry with companies like Microsoft, Intel, Sony, Samsung, and Toshiba commanding a large presence.
CEA is now announcing a surprising turn of events which may end up dealing a crippling blow to Macworld next year according to Engadget. CEA announced last week that it would setup an iLounge Pavilion during the CES 2010 show which would provide 4,000 sq. ft. of floor space for iPod/iPhone accessory makers in South Hall 2.
Since announcing the iLounge Pavilion last week, CEA has sold out the original 4,000 sq. ft. to vendors and has plans to quadruple the size of the iLounge Pavilion to at least 18,000 sq. ft. to accommodate additional Mac developers and retailers.
