How To? Software Development, Development Team, Product Launch

I am looking for people's ideas on how to gather  together a development team and create a product from conception and design requirements all the way though product launch.

Let me start by saying that I am not a programmer or developer.  I do have an idea that I would like to see brought out, so this is a discussion about how to get a team together that has the know-how and how to set and reach a development goal.

The idea is an internet application for OSX; the next step would be to port the application to the iPhone platform.  The application is something that's already on the market, in greater number and better versions in the PC world.  The few existing Mac products have their shortcomings, and I would like to see a "best of breed" product developed.

I would really like to hear your opinions and personal experiences with the following:

- Where do you find the talent pool to write a new program?

- What are industry models for funding software development?
--> Contract payment (money I may not have up front)?
--> Promise of interest in future sales?
   --> Other?

- What's the dollar range for a software development team under these models?

- What are the most important qualities for the visionary/team leader to have (that's the guy with the idea but who does not know how to code)?

- What are the chief liabilities in a visionary/leader that would screw up the project?

- What are the most important qualities that you want the seek in your development team?  Qualities that you want to avoid?

Thanks in advance,

Dale

How much money do you have? Do you already have a company?

What you are advocating here is business venture, not something you do on the spur of the moment.

I don't think you could even start this under $500,000.

Well, you could start it on $0, assuming you're able to find employees or partners that are willing to work for nothing for however long it takes to develop to application, and believe that they'll get their moneys worth if/when the application sells.

Yeah, I don't think this'll fly if you don't have any skills to bring to the table...

This sounds like "Do my CS 201 homework."

If you want to start a software company, you need a partner who knows something about software. Without VC funding, you need people who will work for a share of the company.

Yes, this is aiming for a truly commercial product, and it is a "dream big" idea, which is why I'm trying to learn the landscape that one would be dealing with in going after such a dream.  Having said that, the dollar figure suggested earlier is helpful as is the discussion of VC funding.  For what it's worth, I live just outside of Silicon Valley, so there is a lot of local developer talent.

I appreciate the feedback, and hope to continue to hear more.

Thanks,

Dale

You need to gather talent. How? Talk to people. You need to gather funding, first private (yours, debt, angel if you're lucky) then into VC or general equity. There are so many blog posts and otherwise about starting a business that I feel like this forum is a bad choice. You probably won't make millions; I don't know your idea, but you're not introducing something revolutionary.
