Need some help w/ obtaining a new IP address

Hello Maclife,

I am happymac. I haven't been on these forums in a long time, partly because I forgot my password and just remembered it, lol. I visit maclife.com almost everyday though.

I have a problem here and thought that you guys would know how to fix it best. Heres the story:

I recently thought it would be cool to try Tor.
I never really needed it for anything, but I thought it would be cool to see what all the hoopla was about and also to see if it gave me any added protection while surfing the web. I installed the Tor bundle which comes with Vidalia, Tor, Privoxy, and TorButton for Firefox.

Well the experience was no good. Web pages loaded slower that dripping honey.
I thought the heck with this, so I used the script to delete the whole bundle
(it comes with a terminal command script that you drag into the terminal, enter your password, and it wipes all the software off of your computer). Had a second look through my HD to confirm everythings gone, and it is.

Now it seems that one of the things that I have started to use more often, IRC, has banned me.
I log onto the slashnet servers to chat. But slashnet has banned me saying that i'm running a Tor exit server or something like that. Now the only thing I ever tried when I had Tor installed was surfing the web, mostly because TorButton was installed and everything was set up for me after installation. I do remember, however, that I set up Tor to be a relay as I had read that doing this helps to improve speed, but it didn't.

I think that my IP address is on some sort of blocklist or something, which is unfair I believe. So the only thing to do now is to change my IP address, but how? My IP address is 67.184.***.**
I need to change this to something else. I tried powercycling my cable modem to no avail, where you disconnect it from the power supply for a few minutes and plug it back in. I thought this was supposed to give you a different IP, but it doesn't, at least for me. I have Comcast just to let you know.
So how do I change my IP address? I kinda got used to the IRC everyday. Thanks in advance.

TL/DR: I used Tor, then deleted it from my computer. Now Slashnet IRC servers have banned me. I think i'm on some sort of blocklist. How do I change my IP address so I can use IRC again?
Thanks.

Wow, 68 views and not one reply.

I e-mail the admin and he is looking into it. He stated that I am not on any blocklist though.
Something must be mucked up.
I would still like to know how to change my IP for future reference.

Peace.

Re: Need some help w/ obtaining a new IP address

it depends on your set up and your isp ... in my case with a linksys router and road runner ... I just change the mac address on my wan port (normally to a net card's address that I own so I know it's not going to be a duplicate) and when I change mac addresses, I get a new IP

Also, if you wait long enough, your IP will change.

Mine hardly ever changes ... I know I have had the same one for over a year before.

We also have a local isp around here that includes a static IP with the lowest package offered

Use a proxy server, at least for while.

Yeah, if you turn off or disconnect your cable modem for only a few minutes then your ISP will keep your IP "reserved" for such temporary drop-out cases. Leave it off for more like a half-hour or so, or if you are the only user on your local network then turn it off when you go to work and turn it back on when you return.
