Fallout 3

Alright, so this may be an abysmal question with no hope of a positive answer (great way to start ya?), but here goes. I'm a college student and my parents got me a Unibody Late-2008 MacBook (best present Ever). My question is, would I be able to run Fallout 3 on my MacBook or not. I have Windows XP installed via VMWare Fusion version 2. I'd like to avoid using BootCamp, just because I'm not wild about not being able to run OSX and Windows simultaneously.

Here are my Stats:
2 GHz Intel Core Duo
2 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M
And More than enough HD space

And the recommended Fallout stats:
Intel Core 2 Duo processor
2 GB System RAM
Direct X 9.0c compliant video card with 512MB RAM (NVIDIA 8800 series, ATI 3800 series)

So, would this run well on VMWare's emulation or should I bit the bullet and go BootCamp? Or would I even be able to get it to run at all?

Re: Fallout 3

I'm running Fallout 3 via bootcamp on the unibody Macbook Pro in my signature and it runs petty well. I'm 99% sure Fallout 3 would not run in VMWare. If you have the time, try installing bootcamp and there is a possibility that  the game would run on lowest settings. The Gamebryo engine is pretty scalable.

Re: Fallout 3

I haven't seen it in action myself, but if it really is based on the same engine as Oblivion, then I'd expect it to run almost better than that game. It's probably got that years-old-engine-with-lots-o-polish kind of feel, like Source. I'm still only speculating.

Re: Fallout 3

With the 9400M, graphics will need to be scaled back; it's not in the class of the recommended cards/chips. Don't offhand see why it would outright not run, tho, at least under Boot Camp, if those are Recommended and not Min specs.

Can't remember- if there is a demo, try that first, of course.

Re: Fallout 3

Thanks guys. Looks like it's back to Camp for me. Oh well, better than not being able to play it at all.

Re: Fallout 3

So, I bought Fallout 3 from Direct2Drive and downloaded it from my BootCamp Partition. It takes about five hours and everything seems to go well; that is until the download is finished. I get an error message saying I don't have enough memory, which is a lie- I have 16 GB of free space on my partition. And when I go to extract the files, the zip folder is empty. This has happened a few times. Any ideas on what's wrong?

Well, maybe you don't... I'm not sure how Direct2Drive works, but if it's downloading a compressed version of the game (5.5 GB), expanding it (7GB), and then installing it (7GB), then you wouldn't have enough space.

I'd suggest emailing Direct2Drive support... I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure everyone here uses Steam for PC downloads, heh.

Re: Fallout 3

I didn't even think of that. It's all so obvious. I'll try downloading the file on my mac side, unzipping it, then transferring it over to my Windows Partition. I'll let you guys know how it goes and go for Steam in future.

Re: Fallout 3

i've heard there's ANOTHER DLC for Fallout coming that'll be in pittsburgh and it will raise the level cap to 30.

the game's so huge and i've been rather distracted by other games, so i'm no where near finishing it, but i'm now considering waiting till the level cap is raised before i continue.

Re: Fallout 3

the level cap will be raised to level 30 on the third DLC "Broken Steel". I'm a little pissed at Bethesda that the DLC is only available for the XBox 360 and for Windows Live (PC), since I have the PS3 version and didn't know they weren't going to support it with DLC. Here's hoping for a Game of the Year edition come out with all the DLC for the PS3, or that the DLC exclusivity is over. I'd hate to shell out money for an XBox just to play one game to it's fullest.
