converting .flv to .mp4 (or .m4v, or .mov)
Up until last week, I was able to download youtube videos in Safari as .flv files, then convert them using (the now discontinued) VisualHub. The last 2 I tried to convert created error messages in VH, so I am assuming that the program's functionality is waning. The reason I like to download is because the latency in my satellite connection make watching streaming video unwatchable. I've tried watching with flvThing, but the video is jerky, somethimes the audio is off, and the resolution is weird.
I'm still using Tiger, and FilmRedux reguires 10.5, so I was wondering if anybody knows of any 10.4.9 friendly freeware out there that can convert flash to quicktime files?

EasyWMV works well, even though it is $15.

Code:
javascript:if%20(document.getElementById('download-youtube-video')==null%20&&%20!!(document.location.href.match(/http:\/\/[a-zA-Z\.]*youtube\.com\/watch/)))%20{var%20yt_mp4_path='http://www.youtube.com/get_video?fmt=18&video_id='+swfArgs['video_id']+'&t='+swfArgs['t'];%20var%20div_embed=document.getElementById('watch-embed-div');if(div_embed){var%20div_download=document.createElement('div');div_download.innerHTML='<br%20/>%20<span%20id=\'download-youtube-video\'><a%20href=\''+yt_mp4_path+'\'>Download%20as%20MP4</a>%20'+%20%20((navigator.userAgent.indexOf('Safari')!=-1)?'(control-click%20and%20select%20<i>Download%20linked%20file%20as</i>)':('(right-click%20and%20select%20<i>Save%20'+%20(navigator.appName=='Microsoft%20Internet%20Explorer'?'target':'link')%20+'%20as)</i>'))+'</span>';div_embed.appendChild(div_download);}}void(0);Copy the code above into a new bookmark, that will allow you to download the files as a .m4v file.

I'll second the handbrake route. I just downloaded it and converted a few of my .flv files. worked great, and it's free.

Re: converting .flv to .mp4 (or .m4v, or .mov)
i forgot that the new handbrake can convert from files too (not just dvds like the old one) So put another vote down for handbrake.

Re: converting .flv to .mp4 (or .m4v, or .mov)
Thanks guys, for all the good recommendations. I didn't realize the latest version of handbrake did that, I'll have to update. In fact I'll probably try then all, including Arkayne's (neat trick!), and see which suits me.
One of these days I'll upgrade to Leopard, there's getting to be a lot of 10.5 only software out there, I've just been really skint lately.
Edit:
the new Handbrake requires 10.5.
I think I better scrounge up the +- $100 I need for leopard.

I ordered a copy of 10.5.6 for $101.99 from Amazon this morning. Probably just in time for Snow Leopard's appearance, but who wants to be a guinea pig anyway, right?

I futzed around with Arkayne's code again after I got home, and got it working.
the youtube page went from this:
to this:
I probably shouldn't have been trying to figure this out at work
Thanks Arkayne.
