Exporting video from FCE, quality problem? Interlacing problem?
Hi!
First post, btw
The last few days I've tried to export an edited video from Final Cut Express 4 to a descent quality movie, but have failed so many times that I'm about to throw the mac out the window!
All filming have been done with Panasonic GS400 in 16:9 format, it's all clipped together with some music, and it's total length is about 26minutes.
Now, here's the first problem. Whenever I try to export it, the size is either 300Mb and very poor quality, or 6GB and almost impossible to play, I guess it's too big to handle for the mac I have.
Then with the 6GB file, I've tried to compress it with another encoder, the quality is ok, but then there's a interlacing problem, showing vertical lines whenever there are fast movements. If I try to put a de-interlacing filter (in VLC), the picture gets even more disturbed.
So, here is my goals. An export setting that makes the movie around 1GB and with good enough quality to watch it on a "normal" TV (widescreen), and to solve the interlacing problem. (Like the normal Xvid, DivX, H.264 movies you can find everywhere)
If I'm not clear enough, or there are some information missing to achieve my goal, just ask and I'll answer
Thank you!

The question now becomes are you trying to view it on a computer or on a DVD player attached to your TV?
I suspect that you haven't got FCE settings optimized, but I'm a n00b with FCE.

Well if I could do both, that would be great
As in have a DVD (i know how to use iDVD to make menus and stuff) for DVD-player attached to a TV, and have a file ~1GB (AVI, mkv, mpg doesn't matter really) that I can play i.e in VLC.

What file format are you trying to use? Mpg-4? AVI, DV, Mpg-1?

Well, I haven't exported it yet, that's the whole problem. I've captured it from the camera onto the mac, and then edited it in FCE as I want with audio. Now i want it to become ONE file that I can use, either as a DVD or as a "DivX, Xvid" etc to show people at my mac, in good quality.

I'd like to help, but the ubergeek within me is screaming for more info...
Can you tell us EXACTLY what settings (or process) you are using to export this? It's a bit confusing when you say that you have tried encoding to different formats (hence, your 6GB and 300MB files), and then telling us that you haven't exported it yet.
Walk us through your process for export and what settings you are choosing.
Oh, and one more thing: Your original source is DV Widescreen material, correct?

Go ahead, push it, make my day...
