I'd recommend getting a Q6600, a decent HS+F, and just overclocking it.

In that range, you don't even need to OC it. You'll likely find you're happy with the stock performance.

Re: Considering a gaming PC
ok yeah i7 920 requires like a 250 dollar mobo so thats definitely out of the park. I just want to verify that
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813131299
will work with the Q6600. Also, should I aim for 6 gigs of ram for a quad core?

You should get a Q9xxx quad core - newer tech, better performance.

4 is fine. I mentioned 6 as Core i7 needs 3 sticks/board for best bandwidth (3-channel RAM).

Re: Considering a gaming PC
I bought a Q9400 myself and overclocked to 3.33GHz. 4GB of RAM, and you'll definitely want Vista 64. You could get 8GB of RAM, but I think RAM prices will drop even further than they already have.
Edit: Post 4870!

You'll be at 4890 in a week, and I'll be reminding you of what might have been.
...and I'll be at 25k, wondering where all the time went.
Well, time doesn't matter so much to rampant AIs. Not in increments like these.

Re: Considering a gaming PC
Sweet!
AMD reports improved Phenom II X3 CPUs sales
Thanks to fourth core unlocking
By Nick Farrell
Friday, 27 February 2009, 11:45 REPORTS WHICH POINT OUT THAT the fourth hidden core on some AMD Phenom II X3 processors can be enabled on certain motherboards have lead to a surge in sales for the chipmaker's latest 45nm-based triple core processors.
Apparently all you need to do to get the fourth core active is use a Biostar TA790GX 128M motherboard and tweak the BIOS.
This gives you a cheap four core computer for the price of an already cheap three core. Apparently the same trick can be done with any other 790GX + SB700 motherboard. All you have to do is to modify 'Advanced Clock Calibration' to Auto and your tri-core should become a quad-core.
Sources in AMD have been telling anyone who will ask that the consumer demand for AMD's triple-core Phenom II CPUs has escalated. However the chipmaker has refused to confirm if such a tweak is possible. µ
