From PowerBook G4 1GHz to unibody MacBook - couple of q's, tips (?)
I love the speed of my new MacBook - especially being able to run Windows games (I swear that's all I use nasty, nasty XP for
)
However there are a couple of tweaks/upgrades I'm not sure about.
First of all, I use my laptop at home on an old MacAlly desktop stand with a mouse and keyboard. I've had a compulsion to reach up and use trackpad gestures, but of course the trackpad is disabled when I have a mouse plugged in.
At some point (perhaps not with Leopard) I was able to toggle whether or not the trackpad was turned off when a mouse was plugged in on my PowerBook - I don't have this option on my MacBook. Is there a Terminal command I can use to allow this?
Also, my sources for memory on my old PPC Macs don't seem to be as reliable for newer x86-based Macs. I had the maximum 2GB in my PowerBook, but I think 4GB on this computer would be more complimentary to its processor (I've been hitting the top end of it every now and then as well).
What is the best source for a good 2GB x 2 DDR3 PC8500 kit that won't break the bank? I used to use dealram, but they don't even offer 2GB PC8500 modules half the time.
Lastly, what does everyone use for OS X app-only virtualization/whatever? I bought CrossOver Games and I'm able to play Portal just fine, but heavier-duty apps like X-Plane 9 will just get stuck as they attempt to load, and my Live for Speed driving simulator is useless because I can't pass my Logitech wheel through to the game. I have to boot into Windows for it to work. VMWare Fusion wasn't of much help - I don't want to emulate an entire Windows PC, I just want something like CrossOver but with more capabilities than the Wine setup it uses. Is there anything out there that works better?

I'm fairly certain you still have the option to use the trackpad when a keyboard and mouse are present. go to system preferences > trackpad > at the bottom you should see "trackpad options"
I bought ram from newegg.com and am very satisfied.
as for your windows q's I don't have any idea.

No.
Virtualization sucks for games because it doesn't have direct access to hardware like a "real" OS. That's how it's supposed to work, though - if you don't have access to something, you can't smurf it up.
Boot into Windows.

As dv said, boot into Windows for intensive use. Fusion and Crossover are ok for quick little jaunts (office email, testing a program/webpage in Windows), but gaming is pushing your machine hard.
For RAM, I use Newegg. That link should show a list of RAM that should work. Read the reviews, especially looking for people using it in MacBooks (Pro). Another place I've gotten RAM is straight from Crucial. They have a handy system selector for finding memory, although it's a bit more expensive than through Newegg. Customer Service form both companies is great though, and I highly recommend both of them.
On your trackpad, it should work just fine with a mouse plugged in. In fact, that's how I use mine (trackpad for general use, mouse for fine grained stuff).
iMac: 500MHz G3, headless mod, 20GB main, 60GB media, 320MB RAM, Tiger (server)
MacBook Pro: 2.5GHz C2D, 250GB (160 for OS X, 60 for Vista, 15 for Ubuntu), 4GB RAM, Leopard (main)
20GB 4G iPod, Apple OS
