Gay Themed Film Costs OK Teacher Her Job

Taylor, 50, knew the project was controversial with strong language, but got her principal's permission. A few weeks into it, the principal told her to stop production. After students protested, she held a 20-minute ceremony in a nearby park in which students wrote their thoughts and rolled them into helium balloons, then released them.
The next day, Taylor says, Superintendent Ed Turlington canceled the class. After she complained to a school board member, Turlington put her on paid leave and recommended that she be fired. The school board approved her resignation Friday.
John Moyer, an attorney representing the district, says Taylor was dismissed not because she wanted to put on a play or because of the subject matter. "If someone is saying that adverse employment action is being taken against Ms. Taylor because of homosexuality, they're wrong."
Really? What then? She didn't teach creationism? She actually suggested that her students think instead of regurgitating ideas that belong back in the 19th century?
I hope she sues and gets her job back. This is an outrage!

Why? She stopped production of the play like they asked, the balloon release was obviously done to a) protest and b) give the students closure. It was the students who complained about the cancellation after all.

Yes, but she led a protest with the students.
These are just assumptions and I may be wrong, but...
Oklahoma is the reddest of red states. Unions/employment protections are practically nonexistent. So, when your boss tells you to stop something, you stop and don't lead a symbolic anything otherwise your ass gets fired.
Do I agree with it? No. But I don't think it's accurate to say she got fired because of the project, but because she flipped the boss the bird.
I still believe in liberalism today as much as I ever did, but, oh, there was a happy time when I believed in liberals.

True, but I hardly see it as a firing offense, and I think the school board's lawyer saying, "This isn't about homosexuality," is pure, unadulterated bullsmurf.

Why bother standing up for one's self and expecting one's employer to follow the law ? Just quit so they can continue as they like !

First she lead students in a protest against the school administration, then she tried to go over her supervisor's head to complain.
Sure, she may be "right" in one sense to expose her students to new ideas, but she had to know that she was following a course of action that would get her fired. Anyone who challenges the powers that be has to be prepared to face the consequences.
