Point of condusion re: video cards?

So, I know that physically, all SLI or Crossfire need to work is the pair of PCI-E slots and some kind of bridge chip. A couple motherboards out there support both.

My question is re: those single card SLI/CF solutions like the X2s and the GTX295. If a motherboard has, say, an SLI capability but not a Crossfire capability, or visa versa, does the card use its own bridge chip to take over? Or are the single-card MPGPU solutions restricted to certain motherboards? Can the bridge chips conflict in some way?

(In other words, could I use a 4850X2 with a single slot nForce based motherboard?)

Yeah, the dual GPU solutions use an internal bridge chip.

My confusion is a never-ending story. My upgrade cycle is a great race, but only against myself.

Nearest vidcard thread.

Sturner, what think you now about buying that 3870 recently, with Apple offering a 4870 kit now for $350? Just curious.
