Ubuntu Linux 9.04 (Jaunty Jackelope) Beta Review
It's been quite a while since I last took a look at Ubuntu and it's come a long way. Canonical has just released a beta version of Ubuntu Linux 9.04. In keeping with past traditions, the new version has a cute animal nickname: Jaunty Jackelope. If you aren't familiar with the Jackelope, it's a fictitious rabbit that somehow grows horns similar to those of a mule deer. Heh, heh. The guys at Canonical always did seem to have a sense of humor.
Please note that this version is still in beta. I don't recommend that you use it on any machine of importance simply because you never know how things will go with a beta. That said, I found Jaunty Jackelope to be in pretty good shape at this point. Your mileage may vary, however, so think carefully before you put it on a production machine.
New Stuff in Ubuntu Linux 9.04
This version of Ubuntu comes with a number of new features:
Gnome 2.26
X.Org Server 1.6
New Notifications
Better Boot Performance
Ext4 File System Support
Linux Kernel 2.6.28
This version of Gnome includes improved handling of multiple monitors and the Brasero all-in-one CD burning software. The new Ubuntu notifications are cool and quite slick. You can see a brief flash movie of them in action.

Actually, I think it's still technically Alpha 6, not a beta. But that makes me a total linux nerd troll, so I'll retract my statement.

OK - self correction. It's in beta, according to the Jaunty Jackalope Release Schedule.

Now all I need is a server administration book for dummies, and I could be happy with the Ubuntu server version.

Hope you found one, cuz
IT LOOKS LIKE Ubuntu Linux release 9.04 is out.
We have been playing with it since the alphas and highly recommend it. It isn't anything hugely new, just polish, fit, finish and speed improvements, not that the previous release was slow.
If you are interested in the list of new features, you can find that here. Downloads can be found here, but as of this writing, several of the mirrors haven't caught up yet, so you might want to wait a few hours.
This is a solid and fast release, so if you haven't played with Linux yet, you might pull down the torrent and try the live CD. If you don't like it, throw it away, but you probably will like it. If you're not sure yet that you really should try Linux, just think of the (shudder) alternatives.
For the statistically minded, Canonical has shepherded nearly four releases of Ubuntu out since Microsoft launched Vista, and there will likely be a fifth before Microsoft launches Windows 7. One side is a arthritic water buffalo on quaaludes, the other doesn't force malware and unconscionable EULAs down your throat.
The choice is yours. I am downloading and seeding the Ubuntu release 9.04 now. µ
C'mon, Charlie, tell us how you relly feel.

Downloaded the 32-bit version as I think I will take the laptop back to Ubuntu again.
I change it every once in a while, but always go back as Ubuntu has the best design of them all.

That's no way to administer a server. Google is piecemeal. An up to date book (if such a thing exists) will make things easier.

Has anybody got a foolproof method of getting the sound working with a imac 9,1 (20 inch)?

Yes, the google version of documentation is fragmentary and assumes you already know everything. It's more of a shorthand notebook for experienced admins.

Re: Ubuntu Linux 9.04 (Jaunty Jackelope) Beta Review
Keeping a book of any real size up to date at that release pace seems nigh impossible. Is there an RTFM option with each new release, i.e. detailed enough release notes, perhaps a .pdf manual?
(Hey, maybe they need tech writer$. Apply within!

That's part of the problem... they release every 6 months, so I think that keeping a book up to date for each release is nigh impossible. A book could be done for every LTS release, which in a way, makes a lot more sense.

Re: Ubuntu Linux 9.04 (Jaunty Jackelope) Beta Review
The documentation that is there is very sparse. And it's mostly HTML pages. Which is useful, but not comprehensive or even basic enough in scope. I still mainain that until I find a system admin for Dummies book I'll just be wandering in the wilderness, trying things out.

Perhaps A Practical Guide to Ubuntu Linux?
Look inside here. Now, it doesn't cover 9.04, but given that Jaunty Jackelope is new...

Re: Ubuntu Linux 9.04 (Jaunty Jackelope) Beta Review
Just to play *koff* devil's advocate,
perhaps you might consider this?
We've looked at a couple of religious based distributions such as Ubuntu: Christian Edition and Ubuntu: Muslim Edition. But there's another version of Ubuntu...a dark and evil one. A version so hideous and so terrible that it's name is only spoken in whispers among Linux users...
Ubuntu Satanic Edition 666.6 (Jesus' Jugular)
Yep! There really is a satanic version of Ubuntu and we'll take a look at it in this review.
Please note as always that ExtremeTech endorses no particular religion or any religion at all. Nor do we endorse no religion. We respect people of all faiths and people of no faith and people who aren't sure if they have any faith as well as people who don't care about faith one way or the other.
Just wanted to clarify that for those who get upset about these kinds of things.
OMG, Satanic Hooters!
How can you resist? And btw...
LINUX users who want to run their computers so that they look like Macs can pick up this Mac4Lin distribution here.
Designed by Anirudh Acharya of San Diego, California, Mac4Lin looks like the real thing. Only instead of a fully blessed by Steve Jobs Leopard OS X under the bonnet, it runs something which is not proprietary and is free.
Mac4Lin supports GNOME 2.26 and is backwards compatible. It is unlikely to appeal to the Linux purist, who probably wouldn't stoop to stick anything like a Windows 7 look on Linux either.

P.S. "diffinitive?"
