Any BYO Storage sites out there?

I have a few gigs of video that I'd like to share with a niche community that would be interested in it.  Now, you can't get something for nothing, and the sites that allow you to freely upload video tend to either (1) take it over, re-compressing it to save bandwidth, (2) limit the downloads of it that someone can make without a paid account, or (3) they cap the size of the files.  None of those options are acceptable for me.

Now, I have plenty of space on a shared server with a good web host.  But I don't feel like putting the files on one of the domains I own because my domains are for business and this is for a hobby.  It's more a matter of appearance than anything.

Are there any sites that offer basically a front-end that pulls the files off your own server?  In other words, I'm not about to buy a .Mac, er, MobileMe account so I can have storage space when I already have the space, just not a desirable domain to share it from.

Re: Any BYO Storage sites out there?

couldn't you just use no-ip.org and redirect it to your own FTP server?

Re: Any BYO Storage sites out there?

Hmm, I'm not familiar with them (I'm still a bit of an Internet newbie).  Can I use that service even if my webhost's shared space does not have a static IP?  I get that users can run a client on their PC that updates no-ip.org's record of their IP when it changes, but what about when the IP is that of a server I don't own?

No, no-ip's software would have to run on the server hosting the files. I misunderstood your situation.

In order to have access to a server that doesn't have a static IP, I think you'd have to register a domain name for it.

So, $.

Re: Any BYO Storage sites out there?

I do have a domain name, though, a few of them actually (remember? I was saying those were for business and I didn't want to host hobby stuff under those names).

But if you're saying that I could supply a domain name to no-ip, it seems that it would still be pretty clear to the end user where the actual file was downloading from, if they cared to look.  After all, the actual data wouldn't pass through no-ip servers as it was downloaded -- no-ip would just redirect the user's clicks to my original server space, so it still wouldn't be independent of my business site(s) name.  Assuming I actually know what I'm talking about.

No, forget no-ip.

You register and host ANOTHER domain name. Point it at your server. End of problem.

Re: Any BYO Storage sites out there?

Well, it just seems wasteful to open a new domain for such a niche purpose.  I was hoping somebody would know of a "BYO Storage" site so I wouldn't have to do that.  Oh well.  I guess I'll just throw the files into one of my company site's directories, I don't feel like thinking up a fitting name for a new domain.  If anyone else knows a BYO Storage site, speak soon or forever hold your peace!

As long as your server's IP address is dynamic, and you don't have direct access to it, you're limited.
