Network Settings Dialog Message

G4 Laptop
OS 10.4.11

When I select the 'Network Settings' preference it will open and then immediately a message sheet drops down "Network Settings have been changed by another application". Clicking the the OK button closes the sheet but it immediately reappears so I am unable to make any changes to the settings window.

I have no applications running at the time the message appears.

Any idea where to start?

Thanks

Re: Network Settings Dialog Message

delete the files in:

Library/Preferences/Systemconfiguration

and run:

"sudo periodic daily weekly monthly"

from a command line.

Then restart.

Should solve it. shrug

Re: Network Settings Dialog Message

Thanks that fixed the issue. Now I have to determine why I can't get this machine to connect to my Linksys wireless network. I have a new iMac which has no problem automatically connecting wirelessly.

So the journey continues...

Re: Network Settings Dialog Message

I once set up my parents with a wireless router that worked fine with my computers at home. (I had upgraded.)

My laptop worked fine, but nobody else's would. It took me longer than it should have, but I finally realized I had set up MAC filtering and completely forgotten about it.

Also, I've seen quite a few G4 Powerbooks and iBooks whose airport cards, even when all the firmware and software upgrades are in place, simply refuse to connect to a WPA network. If you're using WPA encryption, try turning that off - if it suddenly starts working, that's your problem.

Sadly, there's not much you can do about it.

That's the answer, if I disable security I immediately am able to connect.

Does this mean the Airport Card is unusable and if so is there a 3rd party card available?

It doesn't mean the card is unusable - just that you'll need to compromise your security in order to use it. Even if WPA doesn't work, the inferior WEP is still an option.

Either way, it depends on which G4 laptop you have. In any case, there are a variety of USB->WiFi adapters which will work. If you have a powerbook, any number of potential PCMCIA cards also exist. In either case, you'll have to verify that the product has Mac OS drivers available, but there are literally dozens of options in either of those categories.

Am I correct in assuming that you have an old 11b Airport card and not a 11g Airport Extreme card? Unfortunately, you can't replace an Airport with an Extreme - the cards are different.

I have the Titanium G4 Laptop with a 11b Airport card.

I will check out the available alternatives.

Thanks for all your help.

I have a Titanium G4, do you have any recommendations?

Looks good. I can't vouch for the product itself, but Newer is Other World's house brand. I've never been screwed by them.

They may or may not have any open box specials - you could try giving them a call.
