Did a project in trial version of Freehand 10 but can't find it now?

A couple years ago or so I had a trial version of Freehand 10 and did a sample project with it. I do not have a current/active version of the software right now. I must not have named it something obvious because I can't seem to find it. I know it was saved because I worked on it over a few weeks in many sessions. Does Freehand save to a special default folder that I'm not finding? When the trial was over could it have deleted the project somehow? What would be the easiest way to go about searching harder for it? Should I wait until I upgrade to Leopard to aid in that search? My memory is horrible sometimes and that is not making things any easier.
confused

Thanks in advance for any prodding you can provide.

In Windows you can type *.tif (example) in the search field and submit. It will bring up every file of that type. Not sure if you can do it with a Mac. Maybe. This should narrow it down a little for you or at least show where some of those files could be hiding.

Yes, that does work on the Mac. Try searching for ".fh10" (don't use the quotes)

Try searching your documents folder first.

Re: Did a project in trial version of Freehand 10 but can't find it now?

Before posting I had tried searching .eps & .ai with no luck obviously. Thank you for giving me the .fh10 extension that I had forgotten about. Unfortunately all that turned up were some tutorial based files. One with my name on it but I don't think it is it because of the file size? Any free software that will allow me to view it?

Re: Did a project in trial version of Freehand 10 but can't find it now?

I thought it would work. Just haven't had to do it in a long time.

Because it was a demo version of the software, possibly it might not have saved at all.

I googled around a bit and I haven't really turned anything up. Check around with a few local printers- maybe they still have a verisin running for the die-hards.

It sure sounds like a great time to learn or re-learn a little Illustrator and/or InDesign.

Illustrator CS3 will open Freehand MX and 10 files. Just found an article. Of course this won't help if you can't find the file. doh!

Just thought it might be helpful to some other folks on here, myself included as I get some strange and outdated formats from time to time.

It's starting to sound like this might be a very good possibility knowing how Macromedia/Adobe operate sometimes?

You are right, I've been "out of the loop" for a while. Can a person draw vector art within InDesign now?

Yes.

Always have been able to, but Illustrator is still best.

Most definitely. And unless your doing a brochure or some other type of "booklet" type work, InDesign really is overkill.

Not sure exactly what you mean by this? If my software of choice back in the day was Pagemaker isn't InDesign the natural evolution to go to? How limited is the vector creation within InDesign? I'm not planning on doing anything very fancy.

BTW, still no luck finding my file. cry

Re: Did a project in trial version of Freehand 10 but can't find it now?

Bummer.

Let me explain. I work for a print shop where I do everything. I print large format (16' Scitex, 48"x96" Oce flatbed, 54" Roland, 2 Epson 9800's). I run a smurf TON of one offs. I receive files from all skill levels. I'm not saying you're not proficient, however, I am saying if you're going to do a one off, InDesign has quite a few bells and whistles that an inexperienced user may not be aware of. This will cause your project to slow down at the printer due to the "is this what it's supposed to look like" factor.

Illustrator and Photoshop are absolutely perfect for this type of work whereas InDesign is more geared toward multi-page layout where design must maintain consistency throughout.

No sense in sending a printer more than they need- it's like using a 10 pound sledge hammer to drive a thumb-tack in.

Maybe this doesn't fit what you need, but it may help other people.

Good luck finding that file.
