No, no. It's Euro-style socialism. Really. Res explained that quite clearly, earlier in the thread.

Say what?
I only explained the abuse of power that happens when government is given too much power.

He is, but he's doing it a little too well. I'm not sure the intended audience caught on.

What I don't think people are catching on about is that the problem isn't socialism itself, it's the power given to government. Socialist or not, that power ultimately is abused.

Funny how the most progressive state with the highest tax rate in the country is now so freakin' broke that we probably can't make it without federal help. Federal help that to be honest the country probably can't afford to give us.

Broke mostly because of deregulation.
I think its the gerrymandering that most the problems stem from.
Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

Don't forget the longstanding but not-especially-socialist policies concerning prisons and taxes.

Everybody is broke. Cali has huge $$$ problems for various reasons, mainly because it is huge/expansive. So per income average per sq mile Cali, although incomes are probably higher than the national average, Cali probably brings in less per sg mile than smaller and similarly "progressive" states.
Oh, and btw, I love how people such as yourself use the word "progressive" in a negative context. Thats really smurfed up.
That being said, Mass. is probably one of the most "progressive" states. We are an educated state. 70% label themselves Independent. Our social programs are some of the best in the nation. The problem was like a lot of states (see the last 8 years of rep. rule) people got elected in Mass on the premiss that you could lower taxes and keep needed services at an adequate level. Taxes were lowered which was fine when the economy was flying. In fact, we had a 600 million dollar Rainy Day Fund surplus. Guess what? Just like 95% of ALL the other states, we are broke because the economy went to hell under the republicans recklessness and taxes are at record low levels. Mass is in the middle as far as state taxes, btw.
People need to realize you can't have your cake and eat it too. And no, privatization does not save money and in fact does give less in terms of services. Its been proven with the limited privatization the other bush did there in FL.

Soon to spread! The new credit card bill has a rider...
House Democratic leaders said they planned to move quickly. Last month, the House approved, by 357-70, a similar credit card bill by Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y.
Complicating the issue somewhat was a measure added to the Senate bill that would allow people to carry loaded guns in national parks and wildlife refuges. That provision, sponsored by Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., passed, 67-29.
House Democratic Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., told reporters on Tuesday that the House might vote separately on the gun proposal so as not to bog down the credit card overhaul.
If the two bills are passed separately as expected, they would be rejoined before being sent to the president as a single bill, said Hoyer, D-Md.

The Oklahoma delegation stands as proof positive that the Republicans are too smurfing stupid to govern. Ignorant, backwoods and deeply committed to the fascist version of Christianity.
I have always been a progressive but I never really hated the Christian right until I moved here and saw first hand what a horror show a society dominated by that ugly philosophy.
