making FCP more portable: possible?

[to note: i'm fairly certain i already know the answer to this, but i'm gonna go ahead and ask]

i'm a busy guy. i've a wife, a child on the way, a dog, cat, and many things outside of the office that require me to not be "that" guy. you know, the one who can stay at the office till all hours of the night, plugging away at projects.

specifically, right now, i'm in the midst of a fairly large video editing project and as you likely gleaned from the title, i'm using FCP. this large project is running up to an impending deadline. while i have no qualms with working at home after-hours, i've discovered this is sorta'... difficult... with Final Cut Pro.

[yes, i'm fairly new to the FCP experience, so i'm sure some of you will chuckle]

last night, i just tried copying (NOT MOVING... i'm not that dumb) all my project files onto my external hard drive and bringing them home. and BING, everything had to be reconnected. that ended up just being a big ol' mess, so i gave up.

so first question (for future reference if nothing else): is the easiest way to make FCP more "portable" to just start everything off an external drive?

second question: is there any easy to make an already existing project portable, so that i can move between home & work computers with ease?

i think i spat all that out correctly.

No clue.

found my answers (should've noted and made an edit).

apparently, one can use the Media Manager to move projects around and consolidate materials. one just has to be very careful about it.

Re: making FCP more portable: possible?

What type of source are you using?  DV?  10-bit SD?  If you can give us a little more information about your workflow (what source you start with and what format you deliver in) I'm sure we can come up with a wonderful solution.

For example, if you edit on DV and REALLY must have portability, you are in the best shape you can imagine.  I've met editors who just install Mac OS and FCP on a firewire drive, and dump all of the DV footage direct to the drive as they go.  As they complete a project, they burn off the final(s) to a DVD, and dump the footage.

You can change the codecs for capture if you are working with 10-bit uncompressed, generate an EDL on the go and then just recapture your source when you are ready to output full quality.

On the other hand, if you're sure you have what you need, good luck to ya!

cheers

End of Line.

Re: making FCP more portable: possible?

working with DV (i hate it so much; hopefully we'll be able to upgrade with next year's budget). anywho...

i discovered that by using FCP's Media Manager, i was able to consolidate everything onto a 1TB ext. HD (capture scratch, render, everything) and move between work stations with nary a problem.

thanks for the help!

If you have your home and work computers set to the same user scheme; you can easily work back and forth with a fair amount of ease.  I take the G-RAIDs home all the time and hook up to the G5 and work with no issues.

Although it has been less frequent as working at home on the G5 compared to the MacPros at work is sort of like going from a sledge hammer to a small baby toy hammer.  big_smile
