I actually was never a -huge- fan of Duke Nukem or Doom
Don't remember much fun with Doom outside of DoomII COOP over lan. I was mostly always on Marathon back then. Duke really changed a lot. I remember playing it on a demo machine in a PC store back when it came out. It really wasn't all that super an upgrade from the Marathon engine but it was a lot of the little things you could do in it which you didn't see done in Marathon. Environments were a bit richer and you weren't always set on a single course since some walls you could blow up. Then of course it was Duke's humor that added a nice flare to things. Instead of you talking smack about how you pwned that sprite to an emotionless screen...Duke did it for you and would always deliver it with attitude.
But I gotta admit, I think I only reached the end of the game once or twice. Most of the time i'd turn it on and play just the first levels between things.
Think the real legacy of Duke Nukem will be in the games it's inspired since. Specially with working toilets and urinals. Ever since then, that has kinda become a standard in games. Even Half Life has working toilets...course, minus Duke's commentary.

I would be super excited if they released a DNF soundboard.

Ya, just don't think we've seen the end of Duke. He's just too much of an iconic character in the industry. If 3D doesn't then another group will likely buy the rights someday. Just a matter of time.
I'd be kinda interested to see the sales of the XBL arcade version of Duke after this news has broke. I bet there was a bit of a surge in sales.
