Vista/Server '08 SP2 go public
Microsoft's second service pack for Vista just hit release candidate status and is now available to TechNet and MSDN subscribers. The RC of the service pack will eventually be made available for the general public to download, although Microsoft hasn't provided any specifics on when this will occur.
The second service pack contains all the updates that have been released since SP1 was introduced, as well as including support for new hardware devices and featuring compatibility improvements with some software apps. Microsoft lists the following notable changes:
Hardware ecosystem support and enhancements
SP2 adds support for the 64-bit central processing unit (CPU) from VIA Technologies, which adds the ID and vendor strings for the new VIA 64-bit CPU.
SP2 integrates the Windows Vista Feature Pack for Wireless, which contains support for Bluetooth v2.1 and Windows Connect Now (WCN) Wi-Fi Configuration. Bluetooth v2.1 is the most recent specification for Bluetooth wireless technology.
SP2 improves performance for Wi-Fi connections after resuming from sleep mode.
SP2 includes updates to the RSS feeds sidebar for improved performance and responsiveness.
SP2 includes the ability to record data to Blu-Ray Disc media.
Operating system experience updates
SP2 includes Windows Search 4.0, which builds on Microsoft's search technology with improved indexing and search relevance. It also helps find and preview documents, e-mail (including signed email messages), music files, photos, and other items on the computer. The search engine in Windows Search 4.0 is a Microsoft Windows® service that is also used by programs such as Microsoft Office Outlook® 2007 and Microsoft Office OneNote® 2007. Autotuning Diagnostics in SP2 now interprets current network conditions when implementing Windows scaling. This feature includes full netsh support.
SP2 improves Windows Media Center (WMC) in the area of content protection for TV.
SP2 adds a registry key that enables modification of the maximum number of open TCP connections to increase application compatibility.
Microsoft plans to release Vista SP2 in Q2 '09.

Microsoft Releases Windows Vista SP2 RC to the Masses
Feel free to check out its latest service pack, everyone is a VIP now, says Microsoft
DailyTech reported a couple weeks back on Microsoft's release of its Windows Vista and Server 2008 Service Pack 2's Release Candidate. The SP2 RC was only available to MSDN and TechNet subscribers. Not wanting to leave the general public out of the testing process, Microsoft has at last announced the availability of the SP2 RC to the masses.
The service pack brings a number of changes and bug fixes to Windows Vista. It provides support for VIA's new 64-bit CPU, Bluetooth v2.1, Windows Connect Now (WCN) Wi-Fi Configuration wireless functionality, faster Wi-Fi resume times after hibernation, and most significantly the ability to record Blu-ray.
It also features a number of software/connectivity improvements, including faster RSS feeds in the sidebar, Windows Search 4.0, the ability to configure the maximum number of TCP connections.

This 64 bit VIA CPU sounds interesting. Perhaps not useful but anything that provides a distraction from the AMD-Intel penis jousting is worth googling. Maybe later.

I'm sure MicroSoft would be more than happy to take your $200 once you get SP2RC installed. And another $200 for the shipping version, $329 for Ultimate.

Windows Vista SP2 Hits RTM
Microsoft's latest service pack will bring the ability to record Blu-Ray, numerous Wi-Fi updates, and other tweaks and bugfixes
On the tails of the release of the Windows Vista SP2 Release Candidate to the masses, only a couple weeks later Microsoft has delivered the RTM Escrow build to its Connect beta testers. Microsoft had already released this build several days ago, reportedly, to its internal testers.
Beta testers can find the new build on Windows Update via Windows Connect. It has been packaged with multiple install options to test, including Slipstream versions and Standalone installers. The new build string is 6002.17043.090312-1835, so if you are a tester or have a copy you can check its authenticity against that.
The new service pack delivers many much anticipated features, along with numerous tweaks and bug fixes which should strengthen the Vista experience. Among the hottest additions in the new pack is the ability to record in Blu-Ray format for the first time in Windows. Other key additions include Bluetooth v2.1 connectivity, Windows Connect Now (WCN) Wi-Fi Configuration wireless functionality, faster Wi-Fi resume times after hibernation, Windows Search 4.0, and the ability to configure the maximum number of TCP connections.
For those outside the testing community eager to get their hands on the final version of SP2, it should be available within a couple weeks, as the RTM build typically is the last step before a public release. Stay tuned for more details.

Re: Vista/Server '08 SP2 go public
SP2 is expected in Q2 2009
Windows users are accustomed to patches, fixes, and service packs being released to update Windows and plug security holes. The latest service pack for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 has now been released to manufacturing.
Microsoft says that Vista SP2 is a unified service pack with a single installer for both Windows Server 2008 and Vista computers. SP2 is expected to be available in Q2 2009. Among the notable changes that are included with SP2 are improved Windows Search 4.0 to speed the search and improve relevance in search results. Bluetooth gets updated to 2.1 to support the most recent Bluetooth specifications.
Vista now gets the ability to write to Blu-ray media natively and Windows Connect Now has been added for easier connection to Wi-Fi networks in Vista. SP2 also adds support to Vista for the exFAT file system allowing support for UTC timestamps for file synchronization across time zones.
Along with the new additions to Windows, SP2 will also include all security updates and hot fixes for Vista and Server 2008. Improvements to Hyper-V virtualization are featured with SP2 to make it a fully integrated feature of Server 2008.
Microsoft says that Windows Server 2008 Standard will get one free instance of the Hyper-V environment, Server 2008 Enterprise will get four free instances, and Server 2008 Datacenter will get unlimited free instances.
Other tweaks in SP2 include [..]

Re: Vista/Server '08 SP2 go public
Windows Vista Service Pack 2 Available on MSDN, Public Release Set for June
Microsoft hopes to entice customers who are waiting for Windows 7 instead
The big news this week is that Microsoft has released its first Release Candidate of its new Windows 7 operating system. However, what most enthusiasts are looking forward to is the Release-To-Manufacturing version, which is the final version that will be mass produced on DVDs for retail and OEM channels. When the RTM version is produced, the project is stated to have reached Gold status, i.e. “gone gold”.
Since Windows 7 won't be available for retail sales until October, Microsoft has been working on Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista to boost sales until Windows 7 hits the market. Microsoft has made the RTM version of Vista SP2 downloadable to the members-only MSDN (Microsoft Developer Network) and Microsoft TechNet. Vista SP2 torrents have already started to appear.
Vista SP2 contains all Vista updates released by Microsoft since Service Pack 1. Since Vista and Windows Server 2008 share the same codebase, SP2 for Vista includes the same updates for Server 2008. SP2 isn't cumulative, so a fresh Vista installation will require SP1 for SP2 to be slipstreamed. Although the security and convenience of installing all updates at the same time is important, there are a few new features that come with SP2.
One of the most anticipated is the ability to natively record in Blu-ray format for the first time. [..]
..
The "Release-To-Web" date for Vista Service Pack 2 is currently expected to be in early June, when it will be made publicly available through Microsoft's website and Windows Update.

Re: Vista/Server '08 SP2 go public
You kan haz it.
Standalone installer hits public, Microsoft details workaround for install problem
Microsoft's Windows Vista has officially entered its Service Pack 2 (SP2) phase, with the release of the second service pack for the operating system to the public. Windows Vista SP2 -- beta and release candidate versions have been tested over past months -- brings many security and bug fixes, as well as some performance improvements. Among the most significant performance improvements are the inclusion of Bluetooth v2.1 and Blu-ray recording.
Accompanying the Vista pack is a Server 2008 SP2 release. The two SP2 updates are available together in a standalone installer. The installer is available in 32-bit and 64-bit varieties.
Some looking to install the new service pack may encounter an unpleasant issue. The tool vLite, used to create leaner installs of Windows Vista, inadvertently removed files need for the SP2 install. For vLite users, Microsoft has posted a workaround to help them get the service pack up and running.
Windows Vista SP2 and Server 2008 SP2 should be posted on Windows Update within a couple weeks. The new service packs are good news for late adopters, like the U.S. Army, as they should help to bring the security and improved functionality of an established release, much like Windows XP's service packs did.

Re: Vista/Server '08 SP2 go public
I arrived at work this morning to see my laptop returned after being re-imaged with Vista Enterprise SP2 and Office 2007. So far it's been smooth sailing and I have to say I actually like Vista. Office 2007 sucks ass, though. Unfortunately IT wouldn't agree to install Vista and Office 2003.

With Office 2007, once you get used to the new GUI, it still sucks.

VLite is 3rd-party and doesn't affect many people. I'm surprised MS even bothered helping.

Army will upgrade all its computers to Vista by December
For those critics who bill Microsoft's Windows Vista a commercial failure for failing to surpass Windows XP in sales, and inability to capitalize in the netbook market, perhaps they should reserve judgment a bit longer. Just as Windows 7 hype is reaching full swing in preparation for a October release, the U.S. Army announced that like many large organizations, it will wait on upgrading to Windows 7. However, unlike some, it is planning a major upgrade -- to Windows Vista.
The U.S. Army currently has 744,000 desktop computers, most of which run Windows XP. Currently only 13 percent of the computers have upgraded to Windows Vista, according Dr. Army Harding, director of Enterprise Information Technology Services.
It announced in a press release that it will be upgrading all of the remaining systems to Windows Vista by December 31st. The upgrade was mandated by a Fragmentary Order published Nov. 22, 2008.
In addition to Windows Vista, the Army's version of Microsoft's Office will also be upgraded. As with Windows, the Army is forgoing the upcoming new version -- Office 2010 -- in favor to an upgrade to Office 2007. Currently about half of the Army's computers run Office 2003 and half run Office 2007.
The upgrade will affect both classified and unclassified networks. Only standalone weapons systems (such as those used by nuclear depots) will remain unchanged. Dr. Harding states, "It's for all desktop computers on the SIPR and NIPRNET."

This is very standard. Upgrade the OS only after the majority bugs are identified and resolved. Corporations are just now deciding on upgrades to Vista, mainly because MS is getting ready to stop selling any XP licenses.

Interesting the difference in sizes. Vista Ultimate on my tower was over 500MB for SP2...Home Premium on the laptop is 343MB.

Well, Ultimate had all those extras...
...which is actually why there's no 7 Ultimate. They didn't deliver much for Vista, but charged way more. $400 is redonkulous.
I kid about the Army. It's just quaint they're finally going Vista when 7 is shaping up to be substantially better at launch than Vista after two SPs.
