Re:  WWDC June 2009 - Official thread

There is some speculation that Apple lowered the speed to conserve battery life. Considering that most 5400rpm drives can't even saturate an SATA I connection, it makes sense. It would be nice however to have the option to switch it over to SATA II when upgrading to an SSD.

It is an odd thing, but every one who disappears is said to be seen at San Francisco. It must be a delightful city, and possess all the attractions of the next world.

Someone needs to take the macbook apart and discover if space precluded the ExpressCard slot. I really don't care one way or the other, but a reality distortion field cannot mask the fact that some people like expandability.

I would have preferred the ExpressCard slot too, but it's not a deal breaker for me.  I'm more concerned about the slower SATA - I see SSD drives coming down in price and I might want to get one in 2-3 years.  It's enough to make me second guess buying a Macbook right now. (or consider getting a last gen. MBP)

Maybe I haven't noticed or maybe this is new but Apple nerfed the 15in Pro in terms of resolution. There used to be an option for a 1650x1080.

13in while nice, is also not that impressive. Really doesn't have that great of an advantage in specs over the plain MB. If it had a 9600GT or something with dedicated VRAM then maybe but...just a MB with a few frills...ehh shrug.

Actually the resolution was 1680x1050; same as the 20" cinema displays; but I think that was only on the 17".  It has been bumped to 1920x1200 though.

The 15 has always been 1440x900 from what I remember.

Nah there used to be a custom CTO option on the 15inch for 1650x1080. Standard was 1440. I remember them offering the CTO option for awhile but its not on there anymore.

I think until RI is is implemented all this super high resolution on tiny screen talk is fracking insanity.

Re:  WWDC June 2009 - Official thread

And when exactly is that supposed to be implemented? They promised it in Leopard. Then they kinda said it'd be in Snow Leopard maybe. When will we get it? 11.0? In like 8-10 years?

If apple hardware produces a 300dpi display, apple software will get their asses in gear.

Re:  WWDC June 2009 - Official thread

Part of the size reduction in SL was supposedly accomplished by implementing/improving RI features. Leopard has some examples of it but its far from completely implemented. As far as I can tell it's limited to Coverflow, QuickLook, Quicktime, Spaces, & Expose under Leopard. It's not implemented in the Finder or in most first and third party apps yet though.

Re:  WWDC June 2009 - Official thread

Yeah, it's a shame it's so close.

I just enabled it in SL with the Terminal command:

defaults write NSGlobalDomain AppleDisplayScaleFactor 2

And tried out some different values like .5 (Oh god, so small!) and 2 (So big!) and 1.2 (Slightly larger.) and if they finished it completely and got some higher resolution displays out there, it'd be perfect.

I haven't set it and rebooted to check out the system-wide look yet. Maybe I'll do that now.
