True, I believe you have to buy a new phone to get this.  If you go to the iPhone 3G new features, it's just copy-paste, voice memos, spotlight, landscape kb, and new messages.

Some issues might be expected with 45 security patches rolled in.

BOSTON (Reuters) - Apple Inc released 45 software patches on Wednesday to address rare security vulnerabilities in its popular iPhone and iPod Touch mobile devices.

The company released them as part of its widely anticipated iPhone 3.0 operating system.

"This is a large cluster of patches for the iPhone," said Dino Dai Zovi, a security expert who is writing a book on cracking the iPhone.

Re: OS 3.0

So far I thought there would've been more noticeable diferences. Still the voice recorder has already come in handy twice. They made sending mms so easy and that landscape keyboard has been a relief. Somehow the device seems  snappier. And the shake to shuffle feature is a keeper. Only thing that the shake should be working when your not in the iPod.

Re: OS 3.0

Three people in my department updated their iPhones to 3.0 and all love it.  They like the new features and refinements, gave the obligatory "feels faster" comment, love the Spotlight search and so on.  None are Mac users.

I love that it seems everytime Apple updates an OS whether it's on Macs or the iPhone, they improve the speed of the system rather than kill it.  My old G4 iMac runs Tiger far quicker than Jaguar or Panther ever did.  And now it seems the same is the case with iPhone 3.0.  Contrast that with Windows updates that typically hammer older equipment.

The weird thing about some of these features is that Apple hid them really really well. I think I might have stumbled across the CalDAV syncing in a few weeks but luckily several people posted it on their sights. You have to go into the following to find it:

Settings: Mail, Contacts, Calendars: Add Account...: Other: Add CalDAV Account:

and then you can enter your information. Of course, you also have to know what a CalDAV account is and why you would want to use it. Personally, this is a great feature for me. It enabled me a create a calendar using Google Calendar that I can then subscribe to on my iPhone, my wife's iPhone, my MacBook Pro, and my wife's MacBook. Now we can share events that we're doing together including the ability to make changes to them and it all syncs wirelessly. That is a great feature.

Did you also notice that if you are syncing via MobileMe you are no longer locked out of syncing your Address Book and iCal manually? Off the top of my head the only thing I can think that this helps with is the ability to sync with the automated Birthday calendar that is created by iCal via Address Book. However, I have long since created a manual birthday calendar when this didn't sync last year. Interesting though.

Frank

Yeah, back when I was in college my friend and I actually used a hardware magnetometer as an input to the Lego Mindstorms that we had to write code for in one of our courses. We used the input to direct it along a specific path. It was pretty interesting how well it worked.

Anyone having success with the Bluetooth sharing between phones?  Aren't we supposed to be able to send Contacts over Bluetooth, etc?  Not having any luck with that.  When I click "Share" on a contact page, it automatically goes to e-mail.  Yes, Bluetooth is turned on, etc.  What am I missing?

I hadn't heard of sharing contacts via Bluetooth. I thought it was Email or MMS, which isn't enabled yet. Anyone else?

I just want to be able to sync my iCal into another Calendar program offered on the Touch that actually has the features I want (Organize/SmartTime+). I would like to be able to do this straight from iCal to SmartTime. Why this is so difficult I have no idea! However, this and other 3rd part calendar programs all require you to first sync to a gmail calendar (or something similar) and then from gmail sync to iCal. This has never worked for me and never has. Any ideas?

Also, since updating there are a couple of apps that keep appearing in the App. Store icon on my Touch even after updating them multiple times. One such app appears and the Install icon is grayed out and after I close the App. Store the icon shows that all apps are up to date. Bug?

I picked up the 3GS this morning.  I was going from a 2G, so it's been a nice improvement.  The plan was to give my wife the old 2G, but the 3G price ended up being too tempting.
