G4 Powerbook Running Hot w/10.5.7

I've got a Powerbook G4 w/867 MHz PowerPC running 10.5.7 w/1.12 GB RAM. I've just had the PB taken apart and the fans and heat exchanger cleaned. Even before the fan starts whirring, the Dock and some apps act jerky, the track pad acts jerky and the jerkiness really increases when the fan starts. And slow? Oh my. I had a birthday trying to load a webpage with video. I recently had a laptop shop complete the repair/update. They suggested the update to 10.5.7.

I see the minimum speed to operate 10.5 is 867 MHz w/PowerPC. Is this the reason for the jerkiness?
Should I return to 10.4? Maybe I should give this laptop away and buy a new one, but I would hate to give away a machine that acts goofy.

Please help!. I love my Mac and will compute on no other.

Re: G4 Powerbook Running Hot w/10.5.7

The 12" PowerBook is one of my favorites (my Mom has an 867.) For her, I recommended to stay on 10.4 for speed purposes.

If the fans and heatsinks were cleaned (removed) did they clean the processor and apply new heatsink compound?

We have an employee that was recently running a 12" 1.5Ghz maxed out with 10.5.7 and reported that it was buggy and sluggish.

If you want to go 10.5 on the 12", I would recommend a new 7200RPM drive to get the most speed out of the OS.

I would go back to 10.4 and maybe try to sell the unit for more cash towards a new Unibody if you want to run 10.5 or 10.6. You'd be surprised at how well the 12" keeps its resale value.

Good luck!

Re: G4 Powerbook Running Hot w/10.5.7

^^^The 12's are still worth a bundle, or can be.

I've run 10.5.6 (latest at the time) with an 867 mhz with 768 mb of RAM, and it was usable.  I wouldn't call it fast, but definitely usable.  Video streaming online (higher quality stuff, like the "HD" setting on Hulu) got a bit choppy in full-screen, but I've yet to have an 867 mhz running any OS that handles that properly...

I would check to see if the heatsink was removed, and if so, if new thermal compound was used to reattach it.
