Cat 9.6 released

Catalyst 9.6 released

ATI has just released Catalyst 9.6 for Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Linux. The new drivers offer bug fixes and performance improvements in select titles:

Performance improvements

Company of Heroes – performance gains of up to 25% for the ATI Radeon™ HD 4600 Series, and performance gains of up to 10% for the ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series.
Crysis Warhead – performance gains of up to 11% for ATI CrossFireX™ configurations.
Crysis – performance gains of up to 13% for ATI CrossFireX™ configurations.
World in Conflict – performance gains of up to 30% for settings are were previously CPU limited.

CrossFire scaling in Crysis has been an issue for quite some time for ATI's Radeon series, so it's good to see that Catalyst 9.6 offers some improvements in this department.

Remember, this should be a 'legacy' driver, so it should work with everything back to the 9500.

Re: Cat 9.6 released

Why does it always seem they patch the same 4 games over and over. Least I keep seeing World in Conflict in the notes everytime.

I never know if its worth the trouble of jerry-rigging these into Boot Camp since my chip is at the lower end of the spectrum and most of the improvements seem to be in higher end chips.

Re: Cat 9.6 released

I installed it on my Quad and uninstalled it almost immediately. The driver crashed twice in 5 minutes while it was crunching Milkyway@home.

I went back to 9.5 which works just fine.

The 9.6 release for Win7 may not be WHQL yet. 9.5 is.

Perhaps not for performance, but check the release notes to see if they've fixed any issues that might still be bugging you.

Benchmark wars, perhaps. Some titles get more love because they're in every reviewer's benchmark suite &/or heavily optimized for NV via TWIMTBP. Anything with AMD/ATi on the box (I know, you buy everything off Steam, no boxes roll tongue) likely needs less- say (at a guess, since I just saw it), Demigod.

Yeah, Books for sure (even sturner w/L4D). I forgot you consider Steam just unneeded overhead.
